Integrity: the adherence to a strict code of moral principles; acting with honesty and speaking the truth; being ethical in decision making; taking responsibility and respecting others; utilising an empowered state for the higher good.
Integrity is a highly desirable virtue – we look for it in those with whom we do business. We search for it in our colleagues and team members. We strive for it as parents and guardians of our children. But how do we attain it? How does it come about? How do we know when we have it?
Integrity can only become a part of who we are and what we do when we raise our consciousness and put our awareness into action. What that means is that through the practice of becoming more present and self-aware, we are finally able to truly meet ourselves in the open field where those pesky should be’s and should do’s no longer apply. And by doing so, we move closer and closer to our authenticity, the truth of who we are and what we stand for. What our values are and what they mean for us. What our red lines are and who cannot cross them. What boundaries we need to put in place and how to enforce them. What makes our soul sing and lights a flame within and how to nurture it. Who we are – without filters, without judgements, without other people’s expectations muddying the water.
And when we are able to truly put our conscious awareness into action, we are, by default, living a life of integrity. Otherwise, how would it be possible to ‘adhere to a strict code of moral principles’ if we are denying our own moral principles of who we truly are? How could we ‘act with honesty and speak the truth’ if we are lying to ourselves and those around us about our own truths? How can we ‘take responsibility and respect others’ if we do not respect ourselves enough to stand up tall and proud and shower ourselves with love and unconditional acceptance?
Acting with integrity requires that we firstly meet ourselves through the lens of conscious awareness. To do this we must do the work – the daily work – of going within, of sitting in stillness, of drowning out the noise, of releasing other people’s expectations and doing what we know is right for us. Connecting with our presence and allowing ourselves to be in the present moment are two of the most powerful actions we can take. These simple acts instantly raises our awareness of self and others and we listen to the wisdom that we hold within without needing to turn to sources outside of ourselves for the answers.
Integrity is soul work – it is rooted deep within every single human being on this planet because it stems from the source of all our existence, love. When we have lost our way, we have moved from love to fear and what we really need is a correction to bring us back to that which matters most: living and leading from our hearts with love and integrity. In other words, conscious awareness in action.
