When I was a child, my family were lucky enough to have a wonderful dachshund, Lucy, live with us. She had a very definite idea of her role and responsibilities. On family trips in the car, she would repeatedly go from one person to another, seeming to count them and make sure they were safe. Then she would relax until we reached our destination. If we were going swimming in a dam, she swam around each family member, shepherding them back to shore, whether we wanted it or not. She was our lifesaver. It was, I assume, quite exhausting work, especially for a short-legged dog. She constantly kept track of all family members. At home, she sat with me while I completed homework or studied. Her whole existence seemed to be focused on love.
Later in life we were chosen by another animal, Peter, a male cat. At first, I thought Peter’s attention on us and his feeding routine was all about him, but I soon realised that he only had our best interests at heart. If I am unwell or unhappy, he spends hours lying right up against me. He purrs loudly and gazes lovingly at me. If I move, he immediately follows me. When we go out, he is always near the door to greet us when we return. His love is so unconditional and comforting.
Cats are routine animals and Peter soon took on one of my regular routines as his own. Every morning I read an inspirational spiritual text followed by a short contemplation (meditation). Before my contemplation I chant a highly charged spiritual word – HU. As I chant HU, I focus on someone or something I love. It could be a person, a pet or a beautiful scene. Peter seems to know when I am about to begin my chanting, and he hops up beside me, snuggles up and begins to purr. He leaves when I have finished.
He seems to know that this is my time to focus on love and he is very happy to bask in that love. It seems to me that he knows how to give and receive love, indeed his whole life depends on that love.
Pets are part of our lives to focus on love. I feel really privileged to be part of that exchange of love.
There is a free app that you can upload on your phone, it features a few thousand people singing HU. (Simply type in HU: Experience the God Sound) on your device.
