Check-In Challenge! By Sylvia Burns

Wherever we are, whatever we’re doing, in every moment, we’re receiving spiritual lessons.

Surely not, do I hear you say?

How do we recognise these lessons when they’re happening for us?

Spiritual experiences can be subtle, or unmissable and life-changing, but we need to be willing to open our hearts and receive them gratefully.

Stuart, my husband, and I flew to the South Island of New Zealand at Easter this year for a holiday. Aotearoa (New Zealand) holds a special place in my heart. Its culture, people and land speak to me on a deep spiritual level.

After our holiday, we arrived at Queenstown airport to fly home.

It was self-service check-in.

I went to a booth and started to check us both in. I finished and realised I’d only booked one suitcase in, not two!

We went to get assistance, and I heard one of the two staff members say, “I’m going on my break now”. This left one stressed-looking flight attendant remaining to cope with a growing queue of customers needing help!

Ahead of us were two young girls, one of whom had made the same check-in error I had. We all waited patiently. Then one of the girls grabbed her friend’s passport, went to a booth, resubmitted the booking and produced the bag tag that was needed! I’d had a nudge from my inner guide to carefully watch what was happening.

I congratulated the girls, then went back to a booth and repeated the process for our check-in. Success! The correct bag tag came out, and we proceeded to bag drop.

Afterwards, I reflected on what spiritual lessons I’d learned.

I’d pushed Stuart aside and taken over checking us in. I had demonstrated vanity and impatience!

The girl who resubmitted her friend’s booking had no fear; she just got on with it.

I realised that I often stand back or avoid doing things because I’m afraid of failure, or looking foolish (vanity, again!)

I thanked my inner guide for showing me how to be braver (and less bossy!)

Later, I reflected on times I self-sabotage myself and let fear rule me, instead of love.

How often I’ve missed out on opportunities because I was afraid that I wasn’t good enough.

Throughout this experience, I repeated the sacred mantra, HU, to myself. It’s a simple spiritual exercise I use that connects me to Divine Spirit and tunes me in to my higher self, Soul. Soul doesn’t have any of these issues; it’s the mind that gets in the way of us being the truly happy being Soul is! The spiritual exercises strengthen my inner connection, so that I, as Soul, am in control, not mind!

Singing HU silently, or out loud, can bring us into balance anytime. It helps us to be open to receive more of the spiritual gifts that we are given regularly.
