Fascial Kinetics of Bowen Therapy to Help Reduce Aches and Pain by Eleni Seitis

Many of us have had muscle aches and pains in our body, and some of us live with this pain every day. If you are one of the latter, there’s a gentle solution for you to release the tightness in your body by freeing the fascia. Have you heard of fascia?

Fascia is the connective tissue beneath your skin, that allows your skin to slip over your muscles and tendons. It is around and through all the structures of your body, the muscles, tendons, bones, blood and lymph vessels, nerves, gastrointestinal tract and organs. It’s the biggest structure in your body. The clear film you see on a chicken breast fillet is connective tissue.

The purpose of the fascia is to bring fluid into and away from the cells of the body. Nourishment is brought to the cells by way of blood, intra and extracellular fluid, lymph fluid and mucous.  These same pathways also move waste fluids away from the cells, along with toxins. Cellular toxins can be caused by physical, mental or emotional exposures. Think of a big stressor such as going for an exam or test. This will create stress in our bodies and unresolved stress will accumulate toxins in the cells of our bodies, causing an inflammatory response which our bodies feel as pain. When we have pain, we end up with muscle aches and pain. Simple?  There’s a lot of processes happening within the body to create all this. Yet, it can be easily undone by loosening the fascia.

How does the fascia become tight? Dehydration is the biggest factor. We get told by doctors and medical people to drink 1 to 2 litres of water a day. That seems such a lot to most people.  Though the more we practice doing that, the less likely we will become dehydrated and the less likely we will have aches and pains.

However, Bowen Therapy being a bodywork modality, works specifically on the fascia of the body. The cross-fibre moves manipulate and stimulate the soft tissue (fascia) to let go of their stuck positions. Imagine putting a big handful of dry spaghetti into a pot of boiling water and not stirring it. It will clump together, and the sauces will not be able to penetrate the thick mass of spaghetti pieces. This is what happens when we become dehydrated. The fascial fibres adhere together, and fluid cannot get into the cells, nor can the nourishment, and waste products, including toxins cannot be released from the cells. It’s like shrink-wrapping your muscles. Once the fascia is released, the muscles (and other structures) can let go of the toxic inflammatory fluid and the pain in your body recedes. This helps the body’s natural healing response to achieve a state of balance again.

As a gentle procedure, Bowen Therapy is suitable for all people – from the very frail to the very fit. It can be applied through clothing and, if need be, with the client standing, sitting or lying down. Because of its effectiveness in treating a multitude of conditions it has achieved significant status as a very popular natural therapy. Many clients experience changes in their physical body, along with mental and emotional changes, during or immediately after their treatment. Bowen therapy can help with sports & accident injuries, frozen shoulder, stress disorders, neck, shoulder & head tension, whiplash, musculoskeletal pain, postural imbalances, respiratory & asthma complaints, acute and chronic fatigue, digestive problems, menstrual problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, colic, hormonal disorders, lower back pain & sciatica, fibromyalgia, headaches/migraine, fluid retention/oedema and impaired circulation.  Usually, one to three sessions are required for most issues.

If you haven’t tried Bowen Therapy yet for your aches and pains, seek out a therapist close to you. You will feel the difference…really!

Eleni works from her home clinic at 103 John St, Redcliffe and for those who have disabilities and cannot come to see her, she will provide a mobile treatment session in their homes.
