Random Acts of Kindness by Gillian Marshall

There’s a catchphrase I use as a guide when I want to say or write something that could be misunderstood or is important – most things, really!

Is it true, is it necessary, is it kind?

I ask…Is it true? Yes, I may believe it is true.

Is it necessary? What are the benefits, if any, to all parties?

Is it kind? That’s the clincher! Often something will tick the first two boxes but not the last one, and two out of three just isn’t acceptable.

So, what is so special about kindness… It is both a feeling and an action.

Sometimes, it seems humanity has forgotten how to be kind. That can change, beginning with each of us. It just takes one act of kindness to set off a chain reaction.

Start an epidemic of kindness!

It may not change the world, but it’ll change you-guaranteed!

Remember the last time you were kind – a smile at a fellow walker while out for a morning stroll, thanking a shop assistant for their help. It feels good, doesn’t it?

I know that we are all Soul- immortal, intelligent beings. As Soul, we are all equal. We live in this physical universe in a human body so that we can learn spiritual lessons.

Soul is pure love.

My daily spiritual practice tunes me into Divine Love, helping me see life from a higher perspective.

I use my creative imagination to view a problem from a different angle, amongst other things.

One of the simplest techniques I use is singing HU, an ancient name for Divine Spirit. I just think of something or someone that makes me feel happy and then sing HU out loud or to myself for a few minutes or longer. It’s so simple! The best way to find out if it works for you is to try it for yourself.

How does this fit in with kindness? Someone asked in a discussion recently, what would the world be like if everyone was more grateful? Kindness and gratitude go together. The more grateful I am for everything, from lessons learned to gifts given, the more gracious I feel, and I become more open to sharing this flow of divine love that I receive with others- a kind word here, a smile there.

Dogs are great role models (and some cats!). They give out unconditional love and are grateful for any acts of kindness or love that come their way. They are also very forgiving and tolerant, another facet of kindness.

Once you start practising kindness intentionally, you may find like-minded people are drawn to you. I like the idea of starting a kindness epidemic. It doesn’t need a cure; it needs to be spread generously.

Singing HU with love in your heart is a good place to start. It won’t change your faith or beliefs, but it will enhance them. Give it time and see what unfolds for you.
