Reducing Inflammation May Reduce Chronic Illnesses by Eleni Seitis

Inflammation in the body can take on many mild forms such as joint pain and stiffness, rashes, or sore throat to more severe crippling forms such as cellulitis, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. How does inflammation start in the body and what are some of the symptoms that show up to let you know your body is on the inflammation pathway? Are there easy solutions to reducing it or minimising its effects on the body?

According to Tortola and Grabowski’s Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, “inflammation is a nonspecific vascular and cellular response that helps eliminate microbes, toxins, foreign material, and dying tissue from the injury site to prevent their spread to other tissues, and in preparation for repair.” This is displayed by the symptoms and signs of redness, pain, heat, swelling, and loss of function in the injured area.

Behavioural changes including sadness, fatigue and reduced food intake may also occur. Milder forms of inflammation can clear quickly by the body’s own immune system and ideal living conditions such as non-inflammatory diet, good hydration, low stress, ample sleep, daily exercise, daily sunshine (preferably morning or evening), low-toxic environments and positive relationships. However, more chronic or debilitating forms of inflammation are often treated with pharmaceutical drugs and take many months to resolve. This can be accompanied by other issues such as serious infections, damage to nerves or blood vessels, and bodily organ dysfunction.

One way to quickly determine if you have acute inflammation is to press a finger on a part of your body that is either sore or slightly swollen until it blanches white, when you lift your finger the blood returns to the skin. If it takes more than 2 seconds to restore normal colour to the skin or a dent is left on the skin, then generally there will be inflammation in this area.

What can you do for early inflammation? Some easy solutions to reduce inflammation in acute cases is to reduce weight to a healthy body weight (every reduction makes a difference), manage stress effectively, exercise daily, and increase antioxidant and non-inflammatory foods and supplements. Fresh fruits and vegetables, salmon and other fatty fish, berries, cherries, garlic, pineapple, beetroot, nuts, Vitamins A, D and E, and many antioxidant herbs such as rose hip powder, fish oil, turmeric and cayenne are a great start.

Other supplements new to the market which can be used in conjunction with each other are Mature Hops Extract (MHE3) along with Emulin 5. How do these particular supplements work to reduce inflammation? MHE3 is an isolate extracted from mature hops plants. It causes thermogenesis in the body, whereby the brown adipose fat (the good fat) in our bodies is stimulated to burn the visceral fat (the bad fat), thereby metabolising the fat in our bodies.

Emulin 5 deals with the root cause and not just the symptoms of inflammation. With 5 antioxidants (ascorbic acid, coffea arabica seed extract, lactobacillus plantarum, myrica cerifera stem bark extract, and styphnolobium japonicum flower bud extract) it relieves inflammation, and healthy blood glucose and carbohydrate metabolism are maintained and supported throughout the day. Immune defence is also promoted and improved due to the reduction of inflammation.

For chronic inflammation, lifelong changes to diet and lifestyle are necessary to stem the life-stealing effects of this debilitating condition. Start with consuming non-inflammatory foods, particularly fresh vegetables and fruit. Drink more water to flush toxins from the body. Minimal amounts of exercise such as walking daily or chair yoga can make a big difference to moving stagnant toxins through the lymphatic system and outside the body. Good health to you.
