I got my first dog when I was three years old. Coco was a corgi and she came from a breeder who lived near us. Mum and Dad thought that it would be good for me to have a dog in my life. Coco was my first animal teacher. She taught me for the next fourteen years. During that time we had birds, fish and another dog came and went. But Coco was the mainstay. She crept up into my parent’s bedroom to sit beside the bed when I was very sick as a child. When I was upset, she was there for me to hug and cuddle. She taught me about unconditional love and kindness.
I believe that animals come into our lives for a reason and a season. Sometimes they are there for short times – other times they are with us for years. There is a saying that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. That is how I view my animal companions. They come into my life to teach me. Sometimes I am open to what they are teaching – other times, I am not. A great example of this was my mare, Doll. She came into my life to mentor me. When I was in a crappy mood but wouldn’t ‘own’ it, she would reflect my crappy mood back to me. Of course my initial response was, “what’s your problem?” To which Doll would reply, “back at you.” Doll helped me to become aware of what I was feeling and the emotions that I was projecting. Every time Doll reflected my mood to me – good or bad – I got better at being aware of what was going on for me. Whilst I didn’t always like what I was seeing, I believe that Doll came to teach me how to be a better human. I believe that we had a sacred agreement – when I was ready, she would come into my life and teach me what I needed to learn. When the agreement was complete, she left my life. But she left me much richer for having known her and having had her in my life.
My life experience has taught me that our animal companions come into our lives to teach us. Whether we will receive their mentoring or not, is up to us. We are always at choice. I have been blessed by many beautiful animal teachers – past and present and I look forward to more teachers in my future.
