Simple Steps to Mindfulness by Vikki Speller

Hello there, lovely soul! Have you ever found yourself lost in thought, worrying about the future or dwelling on the past? If so, you’re not alone. Our busy minds often pull us away from the present moment, which can lead to stress and a sense of being overwhelmed. That’s where mindfulness comes in—a simple yet powerful practice that helps us stay grounded in the here and now.

So, what exactly is mindfulness? At its core, mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with an open and non-judgmental attitude. It’s about observing your thoughts, feelings and sensations as they happen, without getting caught up in them. Think of it as a way to press the pause button on life and tune into what’s happening right now.

Mindfulness has its roots in ancient meditation practices but you don’t need to be a monk or spend hours meditating to reap its benefits. Anyone can practice mindfulness anytime and anywhere. As a certified meditation and mindfulness teacher, here are my top tips to help you get started:

Start with Your Breath: Your breath is a powerful anchor to the present moment. Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and focus on your breathing. Notice the sensation of the air entering and leaving your nostrils, the rise and fall of your chest and the rhythm of your breath. Whenever your mind starts to wander gently bring your attention back to your breath.

Engage Your Senses: Another way to practice mindfulness is by tuning into your senses. Take a moment to notice what you can see, hear, smell, taste and touch. For example, when you’re eating, really savour each bite. Notice the flavours, textures and aromas of your food. This simple practice can turn an ordinary meal into a mindful experience.

Mindful Movement: Activities like yoga, walking, or even gentle stretching can be done mindfully. Pay attention to the sensations in your body as you move. Feel your muscles stretch, notice the ground beneath your feet and be aware of your body’s movements. This not only enhances your physical wellbeing but also brings a sense of calm and clarity to your mind.

Observe Your Thoughts: Mindfulness isn’t about stopping your thoughts but rather observing them without judgment. Imagine your thoughts as clouds passing by in the sky. You don’t need to chase them or push them away—just notice them and let them drift by. This practice helps you gain perspective and reduces the power of negative thinking.

Be Kind to Yourself: Practicing mindfulness means being gentle with yourself. It’s normal for your mind to wander and you might find it challenging at first. That’s okay! Every time you bring your attention back to the present moment, you’re strengthening your mindfulness muscle. Be patient and kind to yourself on this journey.

Mindfulness has countless benefits, from reducing stress and anxiety to improving focus and overall wellbeing. It helps you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to respond to life’s challenges with greater ease and resilience.

So, why not give it a try? Start small and find moments throughout your day to practice mindfulness. Whether it’s during your morning coffee, a walk in the park or while doing chores, these little mindful moments can add up to a more peaceful and centred life. Mindfulness is a beautiful journey of taking one moment at a time, gifting yourself the process of connecting with both yourself and the world around you.
