The Greatest Gifts by Eleni Seitis

One of the greatest gifts I have received, after my beautiful children and grandchildren of course, is my Seeing Eye Dog, Laura. She is my guide, helping me to navigate safely around the neighbourhood and far-flung places we adventure to. She sees obstacles that are hazy blobs to me, she recognises people long before I do and locates doors and gates that I would normally crash into. She locates toilets for me (she is even savvy enough to locate the girls’ toilets), and she is especially astute at locating coffee shops, even if she is in a new area…she obviously sniffs out the aroma – clever girl. She is my 24/7 companion, best friend and confidant. I take her everywhere and we have lots of adventures together. I am truly blessed to have her as a gift.

The giving of a gift may not be as huge as the gift of Laura is to me. For some people, giving of your time is a more appropriate and cherished gift to them. The gift of giving thoughtful presents to someone you care about, that is, you have thought about the person you are giving the gift to and pondered about what would they like, what do they need and would never ask for and what would bring a smile to their heart…that’s a thoughtful gift.

What about a handmade gift for someone? Perhaps you could make a favourite meal or dessert for someone you love. Sometimes second-hand or vintage/retro stores have unique treasures that will appeal to your loved one, at a fraction of the cost. I have a dear friend that loves owls, so if I find small items to do with owls, like jewellery, pictures or trinkets, I will get them for that friend. Farmer’s markets are also great places to find gifts. Online gift vouchers to an event or venue for a family can really make their Christmas brighter. Most people are finding the cost of living today is overwhelming, and for some the burden of Christmas causes considerable stress and anxiety, leading to mental health episodes. Remember what it was like during the Covid crisis when a roll of toilet paper was considered a highly prized gift?

Having a list of your favourite people, family and friends together with suitable (and affordable) presents they will enjoy will make your Christmas shopping easier. Most importantly, have a budget and stick to it. Sometimes just a card with special heartfelt words from you will bring someone joy, and if you stick a $1 scratchie in it, they really light up. I used to do that for my clients many years ago (I got out of the habit of doing it), and seeing the joy on their faces was immeasurable.

Make someone’s Christmas this year joyful and something sweet to remember. Sometimes you are the gift that your loved ones want…not your energy, your time and unconditional love. Only give what you can give and no more. You are a precious gift to this world too.
