The Hidden Cost of Walking Away: Why Staying Is the Real Spiritual Work

Words by Nate Mico

It seems you can’t scroll on social media for more than a few seconds without seeing memes declaring: Walk away. Protect your energy. You don’t owe them anything. Choose your peace.

And this is where I might hit a nerve: most times, that’s a cop-out.

Not always, but I’d say more often than not. For a lot of people, learning to leave has been healing. It’s broken patterns of overgiving, people-pleasing, and staying too long in things that wear them down. Walking away can be an act of self-respect. Sometimes it’s exactly what’s needed.

But we’re getting very good at leaving. We are becoming so proficient at exiting that we’re starting to lose the ability to recognise when staying might actually be the stronger move. Your soul didn’t come here for comfort; it came here for expansion. And expansion doesn’t feel comfortable. It feels like being stretched. It feels like sitting in conversations you’d rather avoid or staying present when every part of you wants to shut down or walk out.

Not every difficult moment is a sign to exit. Not every uncomfortable relationship is a mistake. Not every trigger is something to avoid. Some are invitations. Avoidance often masquerades as healing. Discomfort gets labelled as “misalignment.” Walking away can sometimes be less about self-respect and more about a refusal to face what’s right in front of you. It’s easier to close the door than have the conversation. It’s easier to call something toxic than look at your part in it. It’s easier to leave than stay and grow.

But growth comes with friction. The moments that change you aren’t easy. They push you, challenge how you see yourself, and ask more of you than you expect to give. There’s a kind of strength that only builds when you stay in that tension. This is not because you’re stuck, but because you’re choosing to be there.

From a spiritual point of view, some people and experiences carry weight. They pull you into moments that feel bigger than what’s happening on the surface. These are the ones that shape you, crack things open, and rebuild you differently. This doesn’t mean staying in anything harmful or ignoring your boundaries, but it does ask for something more honest: What if this is here to grow me?

Leaving isn’t always freedom; sometimes it’s a delay. What isn’t worked through shows up again in a different person or the same pattern. Until something shifts in you, the experience repeats. So the question isn’t just should I stay or should I go? It’s more direct: Why am I choosing this? Am I staying because I’m afraid to leave? Am I leaving because I’m afraid to stay? Am I protecting my peace, or avoiding my growth?

The work is knowing which one is true for you, based on what you know, deep down, is being asked of you. Real peace isn’t always found in leaving; sometimes it’s built in the moments you choose to stay open and face what’s in front of you. Choose the path that makes you stronger.

Through the Umana Technique, we activate the higher chakras to trigger “Soul Speak.” This is when your awareness sharpens, the noise drops away, and you know whether to stay or leave without over-analysing. When your higher centres come online, clarity becomes consistent. It is your own knowing, steady and reliable. If you’re ready to move with certainty and committed to growing, get in touch..

  • Coming to the crossroads, and knowing whether to stay or whether to leave.
I was in that position myself and I chose to stay. In making that choice, I knew that love was stronger for us than separation would ever have been.
What I didn’t bank on was that my husband would have a massive stroke and end up in a nursing home for seven months before he passed away. Spiritual growth? Lessons to learn? My spiritual pathway?
So many things that I learned and so many more that I am still learning.
I’m hoping that seeing it has been 12 years, it’s time that a new relationship reveals itself to me and allows me to utilise all the lessons that I have learned in the past.
Stay or leave? Provided I’m not being physically hurt, I think I would pick stay – every time.
It certainly is a great question to ponder.

  • Thankyou Nate, it really is a huge lesson of self discovery being in interesting relationships. I am so grateful that you shared this with such eloquence. Spirit is always the driver
