WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO? BY DAVINA HERBERT

I’ve always liked plans.  One of the reasons that I went into accounting work years ago was because at the basic level there is an order and balance – debits equal credits and if they don’t, then you go investigate until they do.  It would hardly be surprising to know that I also like to have order and balance in my personal life.  When I had a goal/ target, I would usually have a plan and then a couple of back up plans in case the first plan didn’t work.  It was great because one of my plans would end up working out, even if it wasn’t the first one.  However, recently I have found life challenging.  I can have the best laid plans and back up plans, but it seems that none of them work. That leaves me very uncomfortable. I have had to learn to sit with the uncertainty and that’s frightening.  What I’ve found, through a lot of trial and error, is that whilst I mightn’t be able to see multiple steps ahead of me, like I could in the past, I usually do know the next step.  That one thing might be something small, like making time to relax.  I think that has been the most challenging thing for me – having to slow down and take one step at a time.

Let me give you an example.  For years I have wanted to develop my oracle deck to use with clients.  I also knew that I wanted to publish this deck once it’s finished.  But I was frozen with fear about what the deck would look like and how to bring it into physical form.  However, the idea didn’t leave me, so I was facing the situation where I wanted to do something but didn’t know how to do it.  What I had to do was let go of the idea that I had to have everything figured out before I could start.  Then I found that if I didn’t rush the project and kept my awareness open for what I needed to do as the next step, then I made progress.  Sometimes inspiration flowed and the progress was quick.  At other times the progress was slow and I needed to be gentle with myself and not get impatient with myself for not making quicker progress.

What has this process shown me?  It has shown me that sometimes creation takes longer than expected and sometimes the process of creation is an uncomfortable and bumpy ride.  I had to let go of telling myself I couldn’t take action because I was unable to see the whole path.  What I found was that the path actually only revealed itself when I started to walk it.  I also had to be willing to ask for help – sometimes that was from my own internal wisdom, sometimes that was from divine inspiration, sometimes it was from friends.  To get to where I wanted to go, I didn’t have to have everything all figured out, I just needed to be willing to take the next step, then look for the next one after that.
