Why You Feel Like You’re Living at Half-Volume

And what a daily walk might have to do with fixing it

By Nate Micó

There is a version of you that you sometimes catch a glimpse of. Not often. Maybe on a really good morning, or halfway through a holiday, or in a conversation that went somewhere unexpected. A version that feels fully switched on. Present. Alive to things.

And then ordinary life resumes, and that version quietly disappears.

Most people I work with are not struggling in any obvious way. They are not in crisis. Life is functioning. But underneath the functioning, there is a persistent low-level sense that they are operating well below their actual capacity. That something bright in them is turned down. That the full version of themselves is available but just out of reach.

I’ve spent over 30 years exploring why that happens and what actually changes it. And the answer I keep coming back to is both simpler and stranger than most people expect.

Light is not a metaphor

When I talk about light in the context of spiritual work, I am not being poetic. I mean something specific. Every living being carries and radiates a measurable energetic frequency. Healers, scientists working in biofield research, and contemplative traditions across every culture have pointed to the same thing from different angles. The quality and intensity of that frequency is what I call your light.

When your light is high, things flow. You make better decisions. You feel genuinely well rather than just okay. Relationships have more ease. You recover faster from difficulty. You notice more. You feel like yourself.

When it drops, everything gets harder. Not always dramatically. Often, it is just a flatness. A slight heaviness. A sense that you are pushing through days rather than living them.

Stress drops it. Grief drops it. Overcommitment drops it. Years of being told who you should be instead of who you actually are drop it considerably.

The good news is that it responds. It is not fixed. And it does not require a dramatic intervention to shift it.

What walking actually does

I want to be careful here because I am not talking about walking for fitness, though that has obvious value. I am talking about a specific kind of walking that I describe in my book Light Walks: How to Walk with Angels. The title mentions angels, which I know puts some people off. Stay with me for a moment.

Walking at a steady, gentle pace does something remarkable to the brain. The analytical, problem-solving, over-thinking part of the mind quiets down. Not completely, but enough. And in that quieter state, something else becomes available. A kind of knowing that normally cannot get through the noise. Call it intuition, call it higher self, call it inner wisdom. Whatever language works for you, most people have had a version of this experience. The answer that arrived during a walk. The decision that suddenly became clear. The tension that dissolved somewhere between the front door and the park.

A Light Walk builds on that natural phenomenon deliberately. You set an intention before you leave. You walk without your phone. You stay in your body rather than your head. And you practice a quality of open attention that is less about looking for things and more about being receptive to them.

What tends to happen over time is that your sensitivity increases. You start registering things you walked past before. Moments of beauty you were too busy to notice. Signals from your own body you had learned to override. A quality of aliveness that does not depend on anything external going right.

That is consciousness expanding. And it happens in a park, on a suburban street, along a beach at 7am. It does not require a retreat. It does not require years of practice. It just requires showing up and paying a different kind of attention.

About the angels

I have worked with angels for over 30 years. I understand that for some readers that sentence lands easily, and for others it creates immediate resistance. Both responses are fine.

What I have noticed is that the resistance usually has less to do with the idea of angels itself and more to do with the version of angels people were handed. The church version. The one that came with rules and conditions and a very particular image of who gets access.

That version, in my experience, has very little to do with the real thing.

Angels predate every organised religion. Every major culture across human history has independently documented the same phenomenon: beings of light, non-human in origin, that interact with people in ways that are helpful, clarifying, and sometimes extraordinarily precise. They do not belong to any denomination. They are not interested in your beliefs. And they are available to everyone.

In the context of a Light Walk, working with angels is simply a way of deliberately aligning with a higher frequency of support. You do not have to believe in them for the practice to work. But in my experience, people who approach the walks with genuine openness, regardless of their starting point, tend to notice things that surprise them.

The version of you that is fully switched on

Raising your consciousness is not about becoming someone different. It is about becoming more of who you actually are. The uncompressed version. The one before the accumulated weight of other people’s opinions, years of low-grade stress, and the general pressure of modern life turned the volume down.

I wrote Light Walks because I wanted people to have a simple, repeatable practice for doing that. Not a complicated system. Not something that requires equipment or money or a specific set of beliefs. Just a walk, taken with intention, that opens a door most people did not know was there.

The glimpse of yourself you catch sometimes on a really good morning? That is not a fluke. That is what is actually available to you.

A Light Walk is how you start making it the norm.
