A Holistic Journey for Women in Midlife By Lucy Becks

Healing through Grief, Embracing Acceptance, and Nurturing Courage

Grief is such a personal journey, with so many faces and stages. In reaching midlife, with our life experiences thus far, I think it would be fair to say that we have all likely encountered grief in some form. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, each stage rolling one into another in no particular or obvious order. The reasons for grief may be varied; the loss of a loved one, the loss of a friendship, the loss of missed opportunities, the loss of a specific time in our life or quite possibly a loss of something much closer to home – the loss of oneself, amidst the chaos of navigating our way through everyday life!  

Many of us have probably heard of the Hawaiian affirmation/prayer Ho’oponopono which represents reconciliation and forgiveness, roughly translating to ‘make things right’ or to ‘make things move back to balance’.  ‘Ho’o’ means cause, while ‘ponopono’ means perfection. The prayer/affirmation is as follows – ‘I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.’ 

Isn’t it absolutely amazing how powerful just a few words can be? These words can be used for self-forgiveness, or said on behalf of or towards someone else, or even for a difficult situation that requires resolving.  Saying these words helps us to let go and move forward with reconciled love. I personally found this affirmation/prayer useful while going through the early stages of grief after the devastating loss of my brother several years ago.   

At some point in the grieving process, a level of acceptance allows us to move forward, and this takes courage. Often part of the grieving process is about self-forgiveness. Forgiveness is an important emotion associated with the Heart Chakra. When we can forgive ourselves and others, we are then able to let go of negatively stored emotions, and trauma, and move forward with a more positive and loving attitude.  

Somatic practices and exercises are a wonderful way to shift unwanted and stagnant energy from the body so that balance and alignment are restored. One effective somatic practice to connect with the Heart Chakra is visualizing a green light at the centre of the chest, where the Heart Chakra is located. Imagine this green light growing brighter with each inhale, filling the entire body with warmth and positivity. Exhale, imagine any negative emotions or feelings leaving the body, and being replaced with love and compassion. This type of practice can also help to release any emotional blockages that may be preventing us from fully experiencing positive emotions. Remember, it is important to listen to our bodies, and practice self-care exploring these practices. Including Solfeggio Healing frequency 639hz, Jade crystals, Rose essential oil or Rose Water spray, and the colour pink will enhance the practice further as these are all elements that are associated with bringing the Heart Chakra back into alignment. 

For women in midlife, the Heart Chakra is especially important because it is a time of transition and transformation. This is often a time when women may experience significant changes in their personal and professional lives, as well as their relationships and health.  

By focusing on the Heart Chakra, embodying love and compassion for ourselves and others, we can navigate this transition with greater ease and grace. In doing so, we can also connect more deeply with our intuition and inner wisdom, guiding us towards our highest path and purpose. Paying special attention in nurturing the Heart Chakra during the midlife phase, a deeper sense of connection, fulfillment, and joy will spill over into other areas of our lives. 

On an end note, I would like to share a quote by Dodinsky – ‘Be there for others, but never leave yourself behind.’
