A Safe Home for Your Business by Lyndi MacRae

Creating an online foundation you can trust

We spend so much time thinking about how our business looks online.

Does the website look beautiful?
Are the colours right?
Does it feel like me?

But there’s another question I think we need to be asking.

Is the space underneath it all actually safe, supported and working for my business?

Because your website is more than a pretty shopfront.

For many people, it’s the first real home they visit when they want to know more about you.

They might discover you through social media, Google, an article, a podcast or a recommendation from a friend. But eventually, they’ll want somewhere to go.

Somewhere they can understand who you are, what you offer and what their next step might be.

That’s the role of your website in your customer journey.

What do you really need?

This is where I think we’ve made websites far more complicated than they need to be.

You don’t necessarily need every bell and whistle.

You need a website that suits your business.

Can people understand what you do?

Can they find your services?

Can they easily contact you, book, buy or take the next step?

Does it connect with the other systems you use?

And importantly, do you understand enough about it to know what’s going on?

I’ve seen business owners invest a lot of money into websites and systems they don’t really understand. Sometimes they’ve trusted someone else to make all the decisions, only to discover later that the system doesn’t suit them, they don’t know how to manage it, or they’re completely dependent on someone else to make even a simple change.

That doesn’t feel like freedom to me.

The right support matters too

You don’t need to become your own web developer.

I certainly don’t believe we need to do everything ourselves.

But there’s a difference between being supported by someone with the right expertise and handing over the keys to your business without understanding what you own or how it works.

Know where your website is hosted.

Know who owns your domain.

Know who has access.

Know where your backups are.

Know who you can call when something isn’t right.

These might not be the exciting parts of business, but they are important.

What about security?

We talk a lot in the healing world about creating a safe container for our clients.

I believe our online spaces deserve the same care.

No website can be guaranteed never to experience a security issue, but there is a lot we can do to reduce unnecessary risk.

Keeping software updated, using strong unique passwords and multi-factor authentication, controlling who has access, maintaining backups and having reliable hosting and technical support are all part of looking after your online home.

It’s a bit like locking your front door.

You don’t do it because you’re expecting something bad to happen.

You do it because you value what’s inside.

Your website should support your business

This is something I look at through my Sacred Profitable Marketing work.

Before adding another platform, another automation or another shiny piece of technology, I want to understand what the business actually needs.

What does the customer journey look like?

What systems are already there?

What needs to connect?

What can be simplified?

And where does specialist support make sense?

Technology should support the way you want to work, not dictate it.

Because ultimately, I want my online business to feel the same way I want my physical and energetic spaces to feel.

Clear.

Safe.

Welcoming.

Supported.

Your website doesn’t need to be the fanciest home on the street.

But it does need solid foundations.
