Are you still Chasing Happiness? by Eckankar

Let’s begin by pausing for a moment and reflecting on what ‘happiness’ means to you…this can vary from person to person. For some it is a sense of enjoyment and pleasure; for others, a sense of wellbeing, contentment and satisfaction with life.

Now look back over the years and notice if you moved between these descriptions.

Where have you looked for happiness?

Happiness can seem elusive, something we are constantly seeking. In our society and materialistic world, we most often hope to find it in outer circumstances. We compare ourselves with others, look for the new best ‘thing’ and strive to get what we think will satisfy us…will bring those fleeting moments of relief.

Change is the one constant in our world. As I reflect on my life, I realise that I am now better able to ride the waves of change when I am centred within myself. This ability to “take the weather with me” regardless of outer circumstances has led to greater self-confidence and a sense of inner balance and calm. Of joy! It isn’t easy to explain in words, because like so many other qualities, happiness is an inner experience unique to each of us.

What has been most important for me is to find the key to maintaining this inner state of happiness and contentment, regardless of what life might bring. Having spent years looking outside and trying to change myself, there it was, in the heart of my true self, Soul.

Let’s pause again… for a moment imagine that your true self is a spark of the greatest force in the universe, the creative power, Divine Love. What difference might it make in your life to begin to connect with your true beingness?

Join me in a special spiritual exercise to try this out…

Open your heart by recalling the image of something that has filled you with happiness.

Ask yourself, “Where is the key to love?” Imagine something or someone you love dearly and use this as a conductor of love.

Now, as if from a higher point of view, notice the truly happy moments of your life.

Visualize the happiness as waves rolling upon a beach. Then scoop some up and turning towards your future, sprinkle the living waters of happiness throughout your present and future.

Now slowly come back with the knowledge that happiness and love await you both in the present and the years to come.

If we want to keep these blessings of life coming to us, we must learn to be grateful for wat we have and what is given.

This little gift is an adaptation of a spiritual exercise by Harold Klemp, from his book, The Spiritual Exercises of ECK.
