Can crystals help with school refusal… and other big life issues? by Jo Shipley

Can crystals really solve some of life’s big overwhelming issues?  To me the answer is of course yes… and here I’ll explain why.

I‘m currently going through a period of school refusal by my children, and it has been one of those big life moments that has made me stop and question everything. These moments can come at us in a big, dramatic way — like a break-up, a loss, or a health scare. Other times they creep up quietly, and you suddenly realise that what you’ve always believed to be ‘normal’ no longer works for you.

That’s where I found myself – and my life challenge had manifested as school refusal. Every. Single. Day.

If you’re going through this too, please know that you – and I – are not alone. School refusal is becoming more and more common, especially for kids who are neurodivergent or sensitive. It’s tough practically, emotionally and spiritually on both the parent and the child. Suddenly, the path that everyone else seems to be taking doesn’t seem to work for my family… and you can be left wondering, What do I do now?

There’s a mixed bag of emotions in this issue: the pressure to homeschool (when you really, really don’t want to), the fear of messing up your child’s future, the guilt, the judgment — and underneath all of that, I’ve had to ask myself some very searching questions: What does education even mean? What happens if we choose something different? Will the world stop turning if we don’t go to school?

After a bit of personal reflection, I realised that this situation brought up a number of subconscious beliefs around education that I didn’t even realise I was carrying, things like:

  • “Education must look a certain way.”
  • “If I don’t follow the rules, I’ll be judged.”
  • “I’m not capable of guiding my child through this.”
  • “I’ll have to give up everything I’ve worked for.”

The last one in particular was scary. Back in the day (which for me was the 1980’s in southern England), truants were classed as total dropouts – and this easily made me feel guilty.

So, instead of feeling like I’m about to appear on Jeremy Kyle, I approached this differently and practiced what I teach my clients. Instead of spiralling in a vicious cycle of disempowerment, I took a big breath and asked: What’s my soul lesson in this? What is this here to teach me? What is life reflecting back to me? (Kids are very good mirrors!)

I didn’t get the answers straight away – but I found that when I just let myself hold my crystals and sit with the discomfort of my sub-conscious beliefs instead of fighting them, something softened. I started to see those old beliefs for what they are – just beliefs – and slowly, they began to dissolve. They were no longer fear-based and no longer controlled my thoughts. I began to feel more empowered to do things differently, accept that I had to look at different schooling models – and things started to feel more aligned.

When I used my crystals as grounding, supportive tools during the whirlwind of heavy emotion, they helped shift my energy.

I’ve seen, both in myself and with clients, how they can regulate the nervous system, calm the thoughts and create mind-space for clarity. Crystals hold frequency and they gently support a vibrational inner shift from fear and resistance to trust and openness.

Here are a few that have really helped me through this process:

  • Amethyst – When I can’t think straight, Amethyst clears my head and helps me tune into what I truly feel underneath all the noise.
  • Rose Quartz – For the moments I feel like I’m failing everyone – my child, myself, society. It softens my spiralling negative self-beliefs and reminds me I’m doing the best I can.
  • Citrine – A great crystal for refocusing and remembering that joy and clarity are still possible, even when things feel heavy.
  • Lepidolite – Great for calming my nervous system and easing anxiety so I don’t spiral into overwhelm.
  • Smoky Quartz – Perfect for grounding. With my energy anchored into the earth, it helps me release other people’s opinions and stay in my own thoughts.

Sometimes I meditate with my crystals, other times I just hold them during another stressful school meeting. They help me pause, breathe, and ground. They remind me that I don’t need to have it all figured out. I just need to show up, breathe, and find alignment.

If you’re facing something big, like school refusal or any other life-changing situation, crystals can be a wonderful tool to help you pause and refocus. They support your energy, help you release negative beliefs, and face the next challenge with new perspectives.

This is the work that I help my clients with – helping to reconnect with your own inner compass so that you can move forward with clarity, positivity and calmness. The goal is to find peace with where you are, without having all the answers, so that your inner world can be more peaceful and reflect a more desirable outer world. If you would like some help to shift your energy, I would love to help you with a session in my Canberra therapy rooms.
