Embrace the Full Benefit of a Spring Cleanse by Christine Maudy

Nature always shows us the way. When spring arrives, everything bursts with new energy. Radishes, snow peas, young beetroots, and strawberries come into season. How can we use this time to prepare for a new cycle?

Spring cleaning is a cherished annual ritual to clear out the dust and clutter that accumulate in our homes over winter. Yet, our bodies, minds, and spirits deserve this same intentional care.

The Modern Need for a Reset

Have you ever thought about fasting?

It is nearly impossible to avoid the accumulation of various toxins and heavy metals in our daily lives. Even when—like me—you eat organic and avoid processed foods, we cannot control everything sprayed above and around us. Environmental and industrial factors expose us to high levels of heavy metals every day through the very air we breathe and the food we eat.

Many well-known health practitioners advocate for the benefits of fasting to prevent disease, support the body’s natural healing processes, and rejuvenate. Our ancestors instinctively followed nature’s rhythm. They ate seasonally and locally while honoring their cultural and religious traditions. The practice of fasting stretches back thousands of years and remains an important part of many traditions—an invitation to go within, reset the body, and realign our thoughts and habits.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is defined as a partial or total abstention from all foods, or a select abstention from specific foods. It has been the subject of numerous scientific investigations, consistently shown to improve metabolism and stimulate healing. Beyond the physical, fasting invites us to slow down, become aware of our thoughts and emotions, and connect more deeply with our souls.

You may have already heard of intermittent fasting: you skip breakfast, finish your last meal by six or seven in the evening, and do not eat again until noon the next day. This simple shift has a powerful impact on boosting metabolism and enhancing our digestive capacity.

Going Deeper: Extended Fasts and Renewal

I am personally an advocate for longer fasts—three days at least twice a year. Did you know that after just 24 hours of fasting, your body enters repair mode? Inflammation drops, your system switches fully into fat-burning mode, and your mind sharpens. After 48 hours, deep cellular repair is activated, rejuvenating your body from the inside out. The signs of inner vitality soon reflect on the outside, leaving your skin and eyes with a natural glow.

  • You can choose a juice cleanse or, if you have fasting experience, a water fast.
  • Note: It is always wise to consult your naturopath or doctor before beginning an extended fast.

Cleansing the Foundation

To support a deep whole-body detox, better digestion, and sustained energy, I also encourage regular colonics and coffee enemas before and after a fast.

Did you know that colonic irrigation is an ancient practice? Its roots stretch back to Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome, where water and herbal enemas were used for both health and ritual purposes. Ancient Egyptian medical texts from around 1500 BCE describe colon cleansing, while Hippocrates and Galen recommended enemas for digestive wellness. Today, the practice encompasses traditional enemas, coffee enemas, and professional colonics.
