People often think of ethics in terms of fixed rules or a set code of dos and don’ts. Ethics in divination is less about rigid theory and more about living practice. It is about how you show up in the space with another person, the choices you make in what you say and the spirit with which you interpret the cards.
From the time the Buddha sent out his first disciples to share his teachings, ethical conduct was central. The Five Precepts that guide speech, action and livelihood are intentionally broad. A rigid code cannot encompass the endless variety of human situations. Interpretation is always required. Psychics know this instinctively. Sticking to rules can lead to inflexibility, leaving a reading feeling cold or mechanical. However, without ethical practice, divination can become careless and even harmful. The art lies in walking the Middle Way: clear, compassionate, honest and human.
Creating your own moral framework prepares the ground for insight that honours the reader and the querent. When you are reading for yourself (both querent and reader) ethical practice is doubly important! Begin by knowing that how a message is delivered matters as much as the message itself.
Here are some key words to consider in your reading practice: clarity, honesty, compassion, confidentiality, boundaries and self-awareness. You can write a loose code of reading conduct as an affirmative statement that you can hang in your reading space or say before you shuffle your cards. Here’s an example to work with:
I offer card interpretations as insight, not fate. I frame challenges with care and focus on empowerment. I respect the querent’s trust and protect their personal information. I do not consult the cards for medical diagnoses or financial advice. I am aware of how my mood, bias or fatigue may influence my readings. I deliver messages with care, compassion and honesty to honour the spirit, the querent and myself.
Ultimately, ethics in card reading is about cultivating the kind of presence that makes your readings a safe space for reflection. Divination and ethics are inseparable: each grounds and deepens the other.
