Good Guidance: Choosing Help that’s Helpful by Leela Williams

Some decisions ask more from us than we feel prepared for. When uncertainty lingers, it is natural to seek guidance. We won’t always know what to do, but we can know who to turn to.

Before reaching outward, it’s worth pausing to ask what kind of support would actually help. Do you need encouragement to take the first step or space to think things through? Are you seeking information, perspective, reassurance or insight into possible outcomes? Sometimes clarity comes from understanding the meaning of a situation. At other times, it comes from recognising underlying influences.

Not every question requires the same style of advice. A recurring pattern may invite reflection on the past – perhaps even a previous life. Complex emotional scenarios may call for grounding or healing. Practical dilemmas may call for a fresh perspective or expert opinion. Taking time to identify the type of response that would be most helpful narrows the field and prevents guidance from becoming confusing or overwhelming.

We expect reliability from any professional we consult, whether that’s a teacher, a tradesperson or a health practitioner. Intuitive work is no different. In choosing a psychic, recommendations help and experience matters. So does integrity. If something doesn’t sit right, it’s reasonable to seek another opinion or step back altogether.

The term “psychic” is often used as a catch-all, but intuitive practices are varied. A clairvoyant, a medium, an energy reader and a tarot reader may all work differently, even if they share overlapping skills. Just as you wouldn’t expect one tradesperson to solve every household problem, it helps to match the specific intuitive skills to your situation.

It’s worth remembering that guidance doesn’t need to come from another person. Intuitive tools, such as tarot and oracle cards, can be the first call for clarity. Used thoughtfully, divination decks become mirrors for reflection and exploration. They help highlight influences, reveal blind spots and encourage honest analysis. Reading for yourself can also heighten self-understanding and personal responsibility. People often ask whether it’s possible to read for yourself – the answer is absolutely! But there are caveats. Commit to objectivity. Be prepared to challenge your interpretations. It can be helpful to read the cards, as if you are reading them for someone else. And to receive the reading, in the same way.

Consulting cards for yourself can be particularly empowering. It can shift the focus from being told what will happen to exploring what is present. The cards don’t make decisions for you. Rather, they invite you into dialogue with your own intuition and values, offering symbolism and language that can be easier to engage with than abstract thought alone.

Whatever you are looking for in a guide, what you do with their advice is up to you. It is your crossroads. Only you can decide which path to take. My own belief is that there are no wrong paths. Much can be learned from a meandering sidetrack! Detours are part of the process. Pauses inform. Choices that don’t unfold as expected can deepen understanding and strengthen discernment. Seeking guidance is not about avoiding mistakes, but about listening to your heart and making conscious choices as you move forward.
