Havening: The Healing Power in Your Hands By Melanie Eager

What if you could calm stress, ease anxiety, and release emotional overwhelm using the power of your touch?

Havening Techniques are a neuroscience-based psychosensory approach that helps gently “unhook” emotional distress stored in the brain. It involves soothing touch on the arms, face and hands, paired with specific mental distractions like humming, counting or visualisations. These simple actions can create powerful changes in the brain.

Originally developed by Dr. Ronald Ruden, a medical doctor and researcher with an interest in neuroscience, Havening is based on how the brain encodes traumatic or stressful events particularly in the amygdala, the region responsible for processing fear and emotional memories. When we experience a distressing event, it can get “stuck” in our nervous system and replay in the form of anxiety, triggers, phobias or even physical symptoms.

Havening touch helps generate delta waves in the brain, the same brainwaves we produce in deep, restorative sleep. These waves support neuroplasticity, allowing the brain to safely rewrite the emotional encoding of distressing memories. The result? The emotional charge is deactivated, and a sense of calm, clarity and resilience can emerge.

As a certified Havening practitioner, I’ve worked with people of all ages including children, on everything from trauma and grief to exam nerves, performance anxiety, burnout and sleep issues. One of the things I love most is how empowering it is. You don’t need to relive the past or talk through your story. You can keep your privacy and still experience transformation.

As Havening touch can be self- applied under the guidance of a certified practitioner, sessions can be done in person or online, and both are equally powerful. In fact, I now work with most of my clients virtually, teaching them how to use Havening as a self-regulation tool they can access anytime, anywhere.

I was drawn to Havening because of its simplicity, science, and humanity. It’s gentle and non-invasive, yet profoundly effective, and it gives people tools they can carry for life. In a world that often feels overwhelming, that’s gold.

Whether you’re looking to ease stress, build resilience, or feel more grounded in your body and mind, Havening offers a beautiful way to support your nervous system naturally.
