Honouring Grief with Mindfulness & Spiritual Awareness by Vikki Speller

Eleven years ago this month, my mum passed away. In some ways, it feels like a lifetime since I last heard her laugh or felt the warmth of her hug. In other ways, it feels like just yesterday that she was here. When we lose someone we love, the world keeps moving forward but we are forever changed.

At first, I remember my grief feeling like a heavy weight pressing down on me, making it difficult to breathe. Then it would show up in unexpected ways, like when I visited a café Mum and I used to go to and I suddenly found myself in tears. But over time, grief transforms. It doesn’t disappear but it softens. Instead of being something that drowns us, it becomes something we carry, a space that is held within our heart, as a reminder of the love that never fades. With time, our memories of loved ones bring gentle smiles rather than overwhelming tears.

Signs from Spirit

I truly believe our loved ones continue to walk beside us, sending us signs to let us know they are close. For me, over the years, it has been these signs that have brought me great comfort, knowing that my mum is still around. Beautiful reminders that although they are not physically present, their love and guidance remain. These signs can come in many forms, such as;

Feathers appearing unexpectedly

A feather placed upon your path can be a message of love and reassurance.

Songs on the radio

Hearing a song that holds special meaning at just the right time.

Butterflies, birds or dragonflies

Certain animals appear just when you need comfort.

A familiar scent

The sudden smell of their perfume, flowers they loved or even their favourite meal.

Dream visits

Vivid dreams where they appear, offering love, wisdom or comfort.

Numbers and synchronicities

Seeing repeated numbers, like their birthday or special dates.

These moments are not mere coincidences; they are gentle reminders that love transcends the physical world.

Mindfulness Practices to Honour and Remember Loved Ones

Through my work as a mindfulness and women’s coach, one of the greatest lessons I have learned both personally and professionally, is that grief is not something to ‘get over.’ It is something to honour. When we allow ourselves to feel it fully, we also allow healing to take place. Mindfulness teaches us to be present with our emotions, without judgment. By gently observing our grief rather than resisting it, we create space for it to evolve.

We have the ability to stay connected with those we love. By incorporating mindfulness, we create space to honour their presence in our lives. Here are 5 simple yet powerful ways to do so;

  1. Light a candle – Take a moment to pause and reflect on their love.
  2. Write a letter – Express your thoughts, memories and emotions as if speaking to them.
  3. Create a ritual – Set aside time on special dates to honour them with an activity they enjoyed.
  4. Spend time in nature – Walk mindfully, noticing signs they may send you.
  5. Practice gratitude – Instead of focusing on the loss, reflect on the love and lessons they shared.

If you feel drawn to deepen your connection, balance your energy or awaken your intuition, I invite you to join me on this journey. Through mindfulness, spiritual awareness and gentle guidance, you can learn to recognise the signs, trust their presence and find comfort in knowing your loved ones are always nearby.
