The Power of Gratitude by Eckankar

It’s easy to be grateful for the good things in life, isn’t it?

But how many of us feel grateful when we don’t get what we expect?

The car won’t start and I’m late for work! How do I find gratitude now?

Once I get past the angst and anger, and stop blaming everyone else, I realise that perhaps I shouldn’t have left it so late to set off for work, or I should have had the car serviced sooner. In other words, it is my responsibility, no one else’s!

Perhaps I missed being involved in a traffic accident by being late…

In these situations, I could be grateful for learning a valuable lesson in self-responsibility, or for being protected.

Developing an Attitude of Gratitude takes effort.  My secret weapon is the spiritual exercise of singing HU (pronounced Hue) daily. This helps me “tune in” to Divine Spirit, so I can be more aware of things I can be grateful for every day. This shift to a higher perspective allows me to look for a brighter side to life’s annoyances.

Keeping a gratitude journal helps. Writing down 3 things you’re grateful for each day is a good habit to get into. Really dig deep and you may find the things that haven’t worked out the way you’d planned are the things to be most grateful for.

Last year my husband had a series of minor, but worrying symptoms that ended up with referrals to different medical specialists. Finally, the diagnosis of a blood disorder was made, that had been caught early, so that it can be monitored. No treatment required for now. We were both relieved and very grateful.

Throughout this journey, I had reassurance from my inner guide that everything would be fine. I surrendered the situation to Divine Spirit, sang HU regularly, and looked for the lessons we were both learning. Whatever happened, we knew we would get through it together. This not only strengthened our love for each other but reaffirmed that all of us are loved by Divine Spirit.

We both work in the health field, and this experience gave us a valuable insight into being on “the other side”. We are now even more grateful and aware of the blessings that are given to us all the time, in ways that are best for us.

Expressing gratitude is important too. We make sure people know that we’re grateful for a service they’ve given us, with a heartfelt “thank you” either in person, or electronically.

I don’t forget my husband! When he washes up, or makes the bed, I thank him. Sincerely. The great thing is, the more gratitude I show, the more good things happen! In this case, next time my husband washes up and makes the bed, he also does the ironing!

As  Harold Klemp  writes, “Sometimes it’s important to just stop and be grateful for the blessings that you already have.”
