How Karma works in today’s world by Lee Finkelstein

Have you ever wondered what your real purpose is in this world, and what karma really has to do with it?

For me, this has been an abiding question.  In 1976, my husband and I travelled to London to begin an amazing adventure of self-discovery.  In the smoggy, noisy city, I found a kind of familiarity and feeling of belonging, as though this was my real home.  I even instinctively knew my way around the congested inner city, especially the East End.  I was comfortable in this place, which should have been so totally unfamiliar to me.  I wondered about that, but eventually just accepted it.

As we spent many months travelling throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia, I began to experience feelings of ease and familiarity, or conversely, discomfort, fear and anxiety.  Many of the places elicited strong feelings, either positive or negative. I felt I knew these places very well.

We visited many diverse places. Some, said to be holy and sacred, such as Mount Sinai or the temples and churches of Europe, stood out. I did not find a feeling of sacredness in these places.  Instead, they elicited feelings of fear and dread.

I began to realise that I was remembering the many and varied past lives that I had experienced in these places.  I began to understand that I had lived before.  Reincarnation began to be real knowledge, not simply an idea or theory.

I started to appreciate that having knowledge and understanding of reincarnation, as well as an awareness of karma, is of no consequence if I do not learn from those experiences.

What is the benefit of knowing about karma in today’s complex world?  Our true self is the soul – that all-knowing part of ourselves that learns and experiences life. I now understand that all Souls have these experiences, consciously or not, and that these experiences influence us every day, through our feelings, thoughts, actions and reactions.

I have a spiritual exercise, a contemplation, where I sing HU (a soft chant) while I focus, with love, on various aspects of my life and my very being, allowing myself to ponder whatever comes into my consciousness.

By practising this spiritual exercise, I lost a persistent fear of death, something that most of us have.  I realise death is not the end, but a conduit to the next step in our journey.  This profound experience was transformational; it changed my whole life.

Past Life experiences are spiritual treasures that we can learn from to help us move forward.

“We need to understand that the challenges we face today involve all sorts of past-life experiences. Once we gain awareness of these links to other lives, it’s possible to handle our challenges in a better way this time around.”    — Harold Klemp, Past Lives, Dreams and Soul Travel. p 35
