INNER CHILD HALLELUJAH by Barbara Brewster

INNER CHILD HALLELUJAH- A song by Barbara Brewster, to the tune of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’

As I enter the forest, as always, I sing Hallelujah to the encircled trees.

Without thinking the words become my own.

     C                            Am                       C                         Am

They say there is an inner child Who’s soft and sweet and a little wild

   F                               G         C        G

But you don’t really recall her do you

    C                                F        G            Am                       F

She’s petit and fit and plays a lot, And always on her face she’s got

  G                              E7            Am

A smiling sweet and joyful hallelujah

Am       F                Am            F          C   G  C

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah

C                                   Am                      C                  Am

On mountains and in forests tall,   She wanders in ecstatic thrall

         F                            G                C          G

And joins the birds in singing Hallelujah

       C                                   F        G           Am                            F

She’s strong and free and full of joy and plays with every conceivable toy

  G                                    E7                 Am

And when you meet you both sing Hallelujah

   Am     F               Am            F           C  G  C

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah

   C                            Am                         C                   Am

You left her to her lonely way,  Misunderstood, no words to say

   F                         G              C    G      C                              F        G

Except a plaintive cry of hallelujah,   For centuries she’s called to you

   Am                       F                  G                            E7               Am

Remember me as I do you,  It’s lonely without my grownup hallelujah

 Am      F               Am             F             C  G  C       Am

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah

   C                            Am                       C                                    Am

You tell to her your hungry truth,  I couldn’t stay in the circles of youth

   C                                Am               C                           Am

I never meant to leave at all,  but couldn’t carry the social ball

  F                                  G            C         G

And stay in sync to my real hallelujah

   C                         F     G              Am                   F

I lost myself as I lost you,,  Our reunion is long overdue

   G                                E7              Am

We now embrace in awakened hallelujah

       F                    Am            F             C G C

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah

        C                             Am                    C                               Am

And now at last we’re joined again, My innocent young and joyous friend

   F               G            C     G  C                                               F         G

United in a holy hallelujah, With my child who loves to share and give

             Am                 F          G                                    E7          Am

In all the ways we’re here to live, Our smiling is our sacred hallelujah

  F                    Am            F             C G C

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah

    C                                Am                C                        Am

Home at last we now conceive,  The time has come to both receive

          F                  G             C           G                               F                 G

The Universe’s ‘High-5’ hallelujah,  Acknowledged in the pleasures and pains

           Am                          F          G                                             E7            Am

The treasure chest of wisdoms gained, Now paired as One in glorious hallelujah

  F                    Am            F             C G C

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah
