Today’s world is a busy world. We are bombarded by sensations from the time we wake up till the moment we go to bed and close our eyes. All of the data that comes at us, often makes us want to ‘shut down’. Whilst this is not necessarily a bad thing as we all need ‘down time’. What is not good, is when we spend the majority of our time ‘zoned out’. When we walk past cheerful flowers without even seeing them. When there is a colourful sunset and we are so tired and keen to get home, that we miss all the beauty of mother nature.
I used to run a workshop called “Walking Tall”. In this workshop the teachers were equine. Yes, that’s right – equine teachers. I facilitated, but the main teachers were some of our beautiful and patient horses. The lessons that our clients learnt from this workshop weren’t just about horses – they were life lessons. One of the main lessons they learnt was about living in the now.
The inspiration for this workshop was Doll, my beautiful mare, who is unfortunately no longer with us. One beautiful autumn morning I was leading Doll from the stables to the paddock. My mind was like a grasshopper – going from topic to topic. I was so absorbed in my mental gymnastics, that I wasn’t paying attention to Doll. So she just stopped. When 500+ kilograms stops, it brings you back to the present moment – fast. I turned to look at her and asked her, what was her problem. She looked at me in her calm way and asked me what was my problem? Of course my initial reaction was to get huffy. Of course I didn’t have a problem. However, as was always the case with Doll and I, I quickly saw her wisdom. I wasn’t enjoying the time with her. I was all in my mind and not really present in my body. I wasn’t living in the now – I was living in the future and the past. What Doll taught me that day became incorporated into the Walking Tall Workshop about the beauty of living in the now.
What have I learnt from Doll and other animal teachers:-
- When you are feeling stressed, remember to take a breath and look around you.
- When your dog, cat, horse comes up to you for a pat or a hug, they are encouraging you to be present to the moment.
- You can use a timer (on your phone or computer) to help you limit the time that you spend scrolling on social media.
If you would like to go on the waiting list for when I next offer the ‘Walking Tall’ workshop, you can contact me via my website. This workshop is a half day in-person workshop held in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. https://thepetenergytherapy.com/
