Letting Go Of Financial Shame by Abbey Rose

Everyone has experienced shame at some point in their lives, whether it be for a decision they’ve made or a spur of the moment response.

As an accountant, I have been exposed to many people feeling shame over their finances; more specifically, the build-up of years’ worth of uneducated financial decisions based on limited support or guidance.

As a society we have been conditioned to believe that earning a certain level of income is directly proportional to our level of success. And while it is true that having a certain level of income allows you aspects of freedom, success and money really have no correlation.

Once you shift your mindset into viewing success as physical achievements rather than monetary, you’re going to be able to step into a place of self-acceptance rather than a place of shame surrounding your accomplishments.

Here are 3 ways you can shift into the self-acceptance space and remove shame surrounding your finances:

  1. Take a step back and see everything you have accomplished over the past year. Did you make someone smile or laugh? Are you proud of the work you put in in your job or business? Did you make a decision that will benefit your future?
All of these accomplishments have zero monetary value yet place you in a higher state of accomplishment as a human being.

  2. Imagine yourself as the millionaire version of you and ask whether you would change as a person. Would your personality change? Would you become more self-involved or more self-aware? Would you love your friends or family more or less?
If you step into that space and know that you would stay the same person internally, then there is nothing to be ashamed of as you know your self-worth is not dependent on income, but on your value in life as a person.

  3. What does freedom look like to you? When you imagine all the freedoms in the world, what changes would you make in your life? Would a new car bring you this feeling of freedom? Or more time to spend with your friends and family? Would you like to spend more quality time with yourself and indulge in self-care? How are these freedoms or lack thereof affecting you?
Take the time to acknowledge that the freedoms you desire will bring you closer to yourself. Any shame surrounding that right now has nothing to do with your finances, but the way you personally feel about time, and the level of freedom you have in your life.

Releasing shame from your mind, body and spirit is more than just trying to bring more financial flow into your life. It is understanding that the way you treat yourself, and love yourself is the core of everything, and the more you step into that self-acceptance, the larger your financial energetic container grows, opening you up to receive more.

Self first, money later.
