Making It Easy to Say Yes by Lyndi MacRae

Selling can feel like a natural next step in the customer journey

I’ve never believed that selling should be about convincing someone to work with you.

I’d much rather have a genuine conversation and see where it leads.

Listening.

Understanding what someone needs.

And then being honest about whether what I offer can actually help them.

When we look at selling this way, it starts to feel very different.

Less like a sales process and much more like the natural next step in a relationship.

They may already know quite a lot about you

Something we can easily forget is that when someone finally reaches out, they may have been in your world for quite some time.

They’ve been quietly reading your posts.

They may have visited your website, read an article, watched one of your videos or heard about you through someone they trust.

You might feel as though you’ve only just met them.

But they may have been getting to know you for months.

In my book, I talk about the customer journey as a relationship. Someone can move from simply becoming aware of you, to building trust and eventually feeling ready to take that next step.

The sales conversation isn’t necessarily the beginning of that relationship.

It’s simply the next part of the journey.

What happens when they’re ready?

This is where I think we sometimes make things harder than they need to be.

If someone is thinking, “I’d like to explore working with Lyndi”, can they easily work out what to do next?

Think about your own business.

Can someone easily see how to contact you, book a conversation or ask a question?

Or do they need to hunt around your website, message you on social media and wait for you to explain what happens next?

We can spend so much energy trying to attract people that we forget to make it easy for them once they’re ready.

And it really can be simple.

In my own business, I now offer a short 10-minute call as the first step.

It’s not a big consultation or a sales pitch.

It’s a conversation.

I get to hear a little about the person, where they’re at and what they’re looking for. They get to meet me, ask questions and get a feel for whether I might be the right person to support them.

If we both feel there’s alignment and it makes sense to explore further, we can move into a longer conversation.

Not every conversation needs to become a client

This is really important to me.

Sometimes the outcome of a conversation is:

“Yes, I can help you.”

Sometimes it’s:

“I don’t think this is what you need right now.”

And sometimes I might know somebody else who is a better fit.

All of those can be good outcomes.

I don’t want every person who speaks to me to become a client.

I want the right people to become clients.

People who value what I bring, are ready to invest in their business and are willing to be part of creating the change they’re asking for.

That makes for a much better relationship for both of us.

Listen before you offer

One of the simplest things we can do when talking to a potential client is stop thinking about what we’re going to sell them and listen to what they’re actually telling us.

What are they trying to change?

What isn’t working?

What have they already tried?

What would they love to be different?

Sometimes what we think they need isn’t actually what they need at all.

That’s why the conversation matters.

And if what you offer genuinely fits, you can explain how you can help and what the next step looks like.

No performance.

No complicated sales script.

Just a real conversation between two people deciding whether working together feels right.

Make saying yes feel easy

When your message is clear, your website feels welcoming, your content builds trust and there’s an obvious next step, your sales conversation doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting.

Your customer journey has already been nurturing that relationship.

The conversation simply gives both of you the opportunity to decide whether you want to continue it.

For me, that’s what selling with integrity looks like.

Not pressure.

Not persuasion.

Connection, clarity and a genuine invitation.

And when the answer is yes, you can both move into the next part of the journey feeling good about how you got there.
