Children have an incredible way of being present, they are naturally curious, imaginative, and live life open-hearted. Yet even from a young age, children can experience worry, frustration, or self-doubt, feeling big emotions they may not yet understand. That’s where mindfulness and affirmations can help. These simple, heart-centred tools support children in naming their feelings, calming their minds, and building confidence in who they are.
Affirmations are positive words that remind children of their true selves. When they hear or repeat phrases like ‘I am loved’, ‘I am brave’, or ‘I am kind’, they begin to form an inner belief that they are capable and worthy. These little statements become seeds of self-belief that grow with them through every stage of life.
Mindfulness complements affirmations beautifully. It teaches children to slow down, take a breath, and notice what’s happening inside and around them, whether that’s excitement, sadness, or stillness. They learn that all emotions are valid and that they have the tools within themselves to return to calm.
When my own children were young, I began introducing small mindfulness moments into our day, such as, pausing to take as few deep breaths, saying affirmations in the mirror, or talking about what we were grateful for. Now, I get to share those same practices with my grandchildren, watching them light up as they learn to use their words and breath to find calm.
