The seed of inspiration was planted for Gaia many years ago. Back in the late 70’s the property was one of the first health farms to open in Australia (called ‘The Bangalow Palms Health Farm’). Over the years the site wore many different hats, so by the time close friends Olivia Newton-John and Gregg Cave stumbled upon the land, the property was neglected and in a state of disrepair and it needed a new direction to breathe life back into it. Almost instantly, Gregg and Olivia felt something incredibly sacred about the land, better known as Aboriginal Bundjalung country.

Then in 2005 Gaia Retreat and Spa came alive with Olivia fulfilling her dream of creating a sacred place for people to rest, rejuvenate and heal in pure luxury and bliss. Nestled in 25 acres in the Byron Bay Hinterlands, it continues to create a sublime experience for its patrons.

In fact, Gaia has earned its reputation over the last ten years as a world class spa and retreat, receiving the highest accolades and recently being awarded ‘Australia’s Leading Boutique Hotel’ and ‘Australia’s Leading Spa Resort’ at the 2014 World Travel Awards (the second year in a row). The World Travel Awards hosted 400 senior, elite members of the Asia and Australasia travel industries on October 10, in India and is one of the best networking opportunities in the travel industry, attended by Royalty, government officials, industry leaders, luminaries and international media.

“I am so thrilled that Gaia has received this prestigious award, it’s truly an honour to be recognised,” says Olivia Newton-John. “I’m so proud to share this with my fellow directors, Gregg, Ruth and Warwick, as well as our entire staff. Gaia has become my personal sanctuary and I am grateful for our wonderful healers and therapists – our family – who have all helped make our dream a reality by creating an unforgettable experience for our guests.”

Expansion has been underway with Gaia’s recent accommodation upgrade. The new Komala Villas are a top end range of boutique retreat houses. Each of the new luxurious villas offer seclusion, privacy and tranquil indoor, outdoor living with a large private deck, daybed kabana, saltwater infinity plunge pool and private treatment area.

If that wasn’t enough to celebrate, Gaia has also recently launched its own Certified Organic Skincare Range called, Retreatment. The Retreatment organic skin care range captures the healing spirit of the indigenous Byron Bay hinterland reflecting the true essence and meaning of Gaia… spirit of Mother Earth. Drawing from the local extracts and many Australian natives, the Retreatment range absorbs naturally into the skin, nourishing and regenerating to restore youthfulness and vitality.

Gaia Retreat & Spa is a unique experience with the privacy to realign physically, spiritually and emotionally. So why not take the time out to nurture yourself in exquisite surroundings, receive support and guidance from a highly skilled and friendly team, treating yourself to state of the art individually tailored programs, nourishing organic food some of which is sourced locally and also from their organic garden, with sumptuous, balanced meals created by their onsite chef. Gaia makes it all about YOU! And it’s a place to just be!
