Have you ever stopped to think about where you spend most of your mental and emotional energy? Are you living in the past, present, or future? I recently listened to a popular Audible book by Lee Harris, where his guides shared an interesting insight: about 70% of people live in the past, 20% in the present, and only a very small percentage in the future (the Futurists among us have a spot there!). This revelation caught my attention, as many of us, including those in my community, strive to live in the present.
But when I took a closer look at my own life, I realized I often dwell in the past more than I’d like to admit. It’s quite a shock, especially for someone who teaches the importance of present moment awareness. Yes, when we consciously choose awareness, we can stay present, but what about all those other moments?
Think about the times when:
- Fear overshadows your inspired thoughts.
- Past experiences creep in to sabotage your progress.
- Your ego tries to protect you from perceived dangers based on past events.
- Your mind get stuck in memories of “yesterday.”
It’s easy to get caught in this cycle, reliving past hurts, regrets, or even moments of nostalgia. While remembering and reminiscing can be beautiful, when these thoughts hold you back from growing and expanding, it’s a sign that you need to shift your focus.
Living in the present is a powerful practice, but it’s often easier said than done. The past can feel comfortable because it’s familiar, but staying anchored there prevents you from embracing new possibilities. To break free, you must cultivate self-awareness and recognize when you’re letting past experiences dictate your present actions.
Ultimately, your goal should be to transform past limitations into present empowerment. By shifting your mindset and consciously choosing to live in the now, you open yourself up to a future of infinite potential.
So, ask yourself right now: where am I living? The past, present or future? And how can I bring more awareness to the present moment to create a more empowered, fulfilling life?
This is something I love to help clients with and have been there myself so many times! But I have discovered processes and practices that truly do help to quieten the past mind and bring in the expanded mind.
