THE ADOPTION JOURNEY by Davina Herbert

If you are thinking about getting a new animal family member, had you considered adoption?  There are four dogs in my current family.  All of whom have been adopted from shelters/ fostering.  Whilst in the past I have gotten dogs from breeders, these days I prefer to give a dog a home that might not otherwise have one.  Adoption can be a very rewarding option.  There have been many days when I have felt like my fur kids have ‘saved’ me and not the other way around.  However it is not without it’s challenges.  Having been through the adoption/ fostering system, you will need a little more patience and love with these animals as they learn to trust you.  Paradoxically this can end up being one of the most rewarding parts of your journey together.

So you have decided to adopt.  Where do you start?  Consider what sort of animal would work well with your family and your lifestyle.  Do you want a younger animal or an older animal?  Whilst an older animal might have some habits that you don’t like/want, you also don’t have to start from scratch and teach manners (and hide shoes – lol).  Is your lifestyle active and busy, or do you want someone to couch surf with you?  Whether you live in a house or an apartment also impacts the size and type of animal that will be a good fit for you.  Do you currently have other animals?  If so, think about what type of animal would integrate into your current family?  I am a strong believer in following your knowing on this.  When I am looking to add a new animal to our family, I begin with a general idea of what breed, sex and age of animal that I feel would suit.  Then I go and look at the photos on the adoption websites.  When a photo ‘pops’, then I go look at the details of the animal and fill out an application if I feel that he/she would be a good candidate to join our family.  When I adopted Chevelle, our newest family member, it took me awhile to find her.  Eventually someone suggested that I look at websites for foster dogs who were looking for a permanent home. That was how Chevelle came to be part of our family.  I am lucky in that I already have 3 dogs to help me teach her manners and how we do things here. I like to incorporate the energetics into the practical.  Prior to going for the ‘meet and greet’ with Chevelle, I did a crystal grid to help integrate and harmonise the energy of the family.  I do crystal grids for all our animal family members when I feel that it is necessary.  Whether I am working with my own animals or those of clients, I really like to balance the practical with the energetics.

If you are considering adopting a new animal companion, I would say go for it.  I speak from experience when I say that it’s a very rewarding journey.
