The BF that maybe you didn’t know you had by Kathy Wise

When I was young the world of discipline meant getting in trouble! The idea of discipline often brings to mind images of strict routines, restrictions, and limitations. Now I feel differently about discipline and how much goodness it brings to my life. When utilised with mindful intentions, discipline no longer presents itself as a form of confinement—it’s a platform to more freedom, health, and overall happiness. By encouraging small, consistent changes into our daily life, we use our own power to self-initiate things in our life we really want to see.

It’s easy to think of discipline as something that boxes us in, but discipline used for our own benefit can provide boundaries that help improve quality of life. When we cultivate disciplined habits, we eliminate the chaos and indecision that often leads to stress. For example, creating a structured morning routine that includes meditation, exercise, or journaling, provides a foundation for the day. With those practices in place, we are free to move through the rest of the day with clarity, focus, and calm.

The beauty of discipline lies in the balance it brings to our life. It frees our mind from the clutter of overthinking or constantly reacting to our surroundings. It puts us in control of our actions, so we can move through life with a sense of flow rather than being caught up in the chaos of unplanned decisions or being pulled in directions others want us to go.

Health is one of the greatest gifts disciplines brings into our life. The small, daily decisions we make about what we eat, how we move, and how we care for our bodies, have cumulative effects. We don’t have to overhaul our life overnight to see results. Incrementing healthy habits, such as drinking more water, getting enough sleep, and staying active, can have profound effects on both our physical and mental health.

Discipline encourages consistency. When we consistently choose to care for our body, mindfulness, or move with intention, we cultivate resilience and vitality. This discipline leads to increased energy, restorative sleep, improved mental clarity, and an overall sense of gosh I love me! Over time, these practices become second nature, not out of force but out of love for how they make us feel.

True abundance is more than just dollars in the bank—it’s about living with a sense of fullness in all areas of our life. Discipline helps us get there. When we’re disciplined with our time, energy, and resources, we become more intentional about how we invest them. This intention leads to better results in career, relationships, and personal growth.

For example, practicing discipline with our finances—such as creating a budget, saving consistently, or investing wisely—opens the door to financial freedom. It gives us confidence and a sense of self-empowerment, which helps us have a more positive outlook on the future and the steps involved to improve our life. Abundance flows where intention goes, and discipline is what channels that intention.

Many of us are searching for happiness to be a more consistent emotion in our daily life, yet we may never have considered that discipline plays a key role in creating it. Happiness is something we can build through our choices and our actions. The discipline to focus on gratitude, practice self-care, and pursue personal growth shapes a mindset that’s more joy focused.

Moreover, discipline teaches us to embrace delayed gratification. When we work steadily toward our goals, the satisfaction that comes from achieving them is deeper and more meaningful. We learn to appreciate the journey,

The secret to thriving within discipline is to approach it with flexibility and kindness. It’s not about perfection or rigid schedules; it’s about creating rituals and routines that support you and what you feel your better self would appreciate, sometimes it’s a slice of pizza! Start small. Incorporate one new habit into your day—a morning walk, a gratitude journal, or an evening routine that helps you unwind (and hopefully involves SELFMask ;-))

Discipline doesn’t mean you order yourself around like your old school principal (think more Miss Honey from the movie ‘Matilda’), taking up discipline gives you space to create what you are looking for in life. You begin to trust yourself, knowing that you can step out of routine occasionally and still return to the practices that anchor you.
