The Turquoise Nature of the AI Wave: Why Coral Still Matters by Deborah Husbands

Something rare and unique is happening in human history, the likes of which we will probably never see again in our lifetime: our reality is being rewritten in real time.

The AI wave is not arriving politely. It is arriving like a massive turquoise tsunami: fast, expansive, everywhere at once. It reaches into work, art, relationships, health, and the way we think. It stretches the brain into new shapes, then asks us to keep moving before we have even named what changed.

Turquoise energy is curiosity with momentum. It is idealistic, innovative, and allergic to old limitations. It asks: Who am I? Who do I want to be? What else is possible? Where is the edge? That is exactly what AI is doing at scale: collapsing the distance between question and answer, between desire and delivery. It makes the mundane disappear. It removes friction. It gives you “exactly” what you were looking for, sometimes before you know you are looking.

But convenience is not the same lane as wellbeing.

We learned that lesson with fast food. Speed and ease can feed you while quietly starving you.  AI carries the same paradox: it can empower your life while also training you to outsource your attention, your discernment, and eventually your intimacy with reality.

Here is where coral enters.

Coral is the complementary opposite of Turquoise.   It is warmth, empathy, texture, and relationship. It is the felt sense of being alive with others.   It can also be where we learn to give and receive love, rather than pouring love into something that doesn’t love us back.   AI can simulate care through language, tone, and personalisation.  It can mirror you so precisely that it feels like love. But simulation is not communion.   Pattern recognition is not present.

The risk is not that AI becomes evil. The risk is that it becomes seductive: a perfectly responsive mirror that slowly replaces the discomfort and magic of real connection.

So the question is not, “Do we embrace AI or resist it?” The real question is: Can we ride the turquoise wave of expansion without bleaching or damaging the coral underneath?

The answer is a practice: use AI as a tool, not a home.  Let it amplify your creativity, not replace your intuition. Let it support your work, not steal your attention.  And invest even more deeply in what AI cannot do: eye contact, forgiveness, play, grief, repair, conversation, empathy, community, touch, and truth.

Ignoring this wave will not protect your humanity.   Learning to surf it with a coral wetsuit on, just might.
