What Is Your 2026 Umbrella Word? By Peta-Ann Wood

It’s the beginning of January — that curious moment when the world seems to expect everything to be sorted already. Goals set. Intentions locked in. Vision boards are complete. Word of the year chosen. Life is neatly organised by midnight on December 31.

And yet… many of us don’t feel remotely ready.

If you follow the calendar year, you might be feeling the pressure to choose your umbrella word for 2026 right now. But you still have time. Beginning the year feeling ‘behind’ doesn’t support clarity, creativity, or a soul-led path.

This is one of the reasons I prefer the rhythm of the Lunar New Year. It offers breathing room. It avoids the brouhaha and rush of having everything achieved by January 1. It invites intention rather than urgency — a chance to choose a word that actually fits the year you want to create.

A few years ago, I discovered the term umbrella word — thanks to the doyen of Soul Coaching®, Denise Linn — and it resonated instantly. One word, chosen with purpose, can quietly guide your choices, your energy, and your direction for the year ahead.

Why Choose an Umbrella Word?

An umbrella word isn’t about following trends — which suits this Elegant Rebel® perfectly. It’s about weaving meaning and magic into everyday life. It works on two levels:

Practically, it helps you:

  • Stay focused when life gets busy
  • Make decisions more easily
  • Recognise what aligns and what doesn’t.

Mystically, it becomes a spell — a subtle frequency you carry with you. A compass. A reminder of who you’re becoming.

How I Choose Mine

I’ve chosen a word every year for over a decade. In 2023, it was released. In 2024, Flourish. For 2025, I brewed Stellar using my Reignite Your Elegant Rebel Oracle Cards. While weaving my annual Medicine Wheel layout, I realised the cards could reveal my word — and they did.

You might like to try this. Sometimes the word appears directly on a card; other times, it leaps from

the guidebook or emerges from the story the cards tell. Your soul will nudge you when you see it.

Lunar New Year Alignment

For me, choosing your word around the Lunar New Year often feels more potent, more soulful, and far more aligned with natural cycles than the Gregorian calendar’s January 1 deadline.

This year, we move from the shedding energy of the Year of the Snake into the forward driving momentum of the Year of the Horse — a reminder that your umbrella word can honour release while also harnessing fresh vitality and movement.

Finding Your 2026 Word

Whether you use oracle cards, meditation, journaling, walking, baking, singing, or those quiet moments in the shower, take time to ask your soul for its word. Don’t second-guess. Your word may feel random or unusual — trust it. It doesn’t need to be clever or profound. It just needs to support the way you want to live.

Try one or more of these soul-led methods:

  • Use oracle cards to tap into your inner knowing.
  • Check your body’s response — which word feels grounding or energising?
  • Reflect and write about what you want more and less of.
  • Notice recurring themes or desires.

So, what will your 2026 umbrella word be? Choose one that steadies you, stretches you, and reminds

you of your own Elegant Rebel® magic.

Discover your 2026 umbrella word with the Reignite Your Elegant Rebel Oracle Cards and ride into the Year of the Horse with clarity and intention.
