Where am I living? This is a topic that has absorbed a huge portion of my attention and energy for some time now. I am moving house, but I am not sure where or when. To live a fulfilled and creative life during this pro-longed period of uncertainty has definitely been challenging. How do I make plans where I don’t know where I will be living? Is it worthwhile to do any home improvements, or keep it to minimal repairs? To help get me through this time, I have been reflecting on the wisdom of Monsieur, the main therapy horse that I used to use for client workshops. Sadly Monsieur is no longer with us, but his memory and wisdom lives on. During his earlier years, Monsieur ended up in the Doggers. The Doggers is where people give or sell horses that they no longer want. Unless someone comes and buys the horse, they eventually end up in dog food. Monsieur made his way out of the Doggers twice, which is a remarkable achievement. When I first met Monsieur, I noticed that he was very guarded and could not relax around people. Over time and with help and encouragement, he was able to turn his life around. He would play football with clients and was a great example of a loving and ‘chilled’ individual. When I did client sessions I would talk about his past. One day Monsieur got upset about that. “Why do you keep harping on about the past? I live in the now and don’t want to dwell on who I used to be.” I explained to him that for people to truly appreciate his gifts and how far he had come, they had to know a little about his life journey. He accepted that, but asked me to keep the stories of his past brief. His wisdom has helped me to see that the issue of where I ‘live’ is not only about where I am living physically. It is also about where I am living emotionally. Am I living in the upset and drama of life not working out the way I had expected? Or am I accepting that things always work out, even when it looks nothing like what I thought it would? To be honest, I toggle between the two ‘places of living’. Whilst I do my best to ‘live’ in the present with love and creativity, there are times when I ‘live’ in the past drama and upset. The choice of where I ‘live’ is always mine – even when I forget.
