In today’s fast-paced world, even our littlest humans are feeling the weight of stress. From school pressures to social dynamics, children are increasingly experiencing anxiety—often showing up as tummy aches, restlessness, or behavioural changes. As a Soul Therapist and long-time advocate for mind-body wellness, I believe in nurturing children holistically, and one gentle yet powerful tool we can offer them is Yoga Therapy.
Why Yoga Therapy?
Yoga Therapy is a mindful, movement-based practice designed to support the whole child—physically, emotionally, and energetically. Tailored to meet individual needs, it blends breath work, movement, meditation, and relaxation in a child-friendly way. Supporting the organs with specifically designed exercises for children dealing with anxiety and digestive discomfort, yoga becomes more than just stretching—it becomes a tool for self-regulation, self-awareness, and healing.
1. Easing Anxiety through Movement & Breath
Anxious children often live in a state of “fight or flight,” where their nervous system is overstimulated. Yoga Therapy teaches them to reconnect with the breath, which is the quickest path to calming the nervous system.
Breathing Exercises
*Bunny Breaths-short nose inhales, long mouth exhales
*Bubble Breaths-imagining blowing bubbles while exhaling
These simple techniques activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping children shift from stress to calm. Combined with gentle postures like Child’s Pose or Legs-Up-The-Wall, children begin to feel safe, grounded, and more in control of their emotions.
2. Supporting the Digestive System
Did you know the gut is often called the “second brain”?
Anxiety and poor digestion go hand-in-hand. Many children internalise their feelings in their tummy, leading to discomfort, constipation, or a lack of appetite. Through gentle, twisting postures and belly-focused breathing, Yoga Therapy stimulates digestion and supports healthy gut function.
Helpful Simple Poses include:
*Cat-Cow Pose – massages abdominal organs
*Cow Pose – great for releasing trapped gas and easing bloating
*Mouse Pose – great for stretching out the body whilst resting
These movements improve circulation, aid elimination, and teach kids to trust and tune in to their body’s natural rhythms. – calming the nervous system and gently compresses the belly , back two and fro
3. Creating Happier, More Resilient Kids
Yoga Therapy isn’t just about reducing symptoms—it’s about building lifelong tools for well-being. It empowers children to notice what they feel, breathe through challenges, and respond with awareness rather than overwhelm.
By introducing mindfulness games, creative visualisations, and sound therapy, we spark joy and curiosity in their practice. One session might end with a story-led meditation under a soft blanket; another might involve drawing a “happy belly” or using tuning forks to feel energy shifts.
The result!
???? More confidence
???? Better sleep
???? Greater emotional balance
Ultimately—happier kids.
