Your feelings matter because YOU matter by Luke La Vie

Hi Holistic Bliss readers, over the next twelve months I will be assisting you with emotions and feelings. It’s very tricky territory, as we all typically have many thoughts and beliefs that get in the way of us being able to process and deal with our feelings naturally.  I’ll often use the two words – feelings and emotions – interchangeably. So please be aware – in my world they are different words for the same thing.

This series of articles will take you deep into the world of feelings and offer practical strategies to assist with processing and clearing your feelings. Overall, we will learn:

– What is the natural process with our emotions

– Emotions that we like and dislike

– How to accept our emotions in the moment

– Why we might be tempted to suppress our emotions

– Understanding that our emotions are just as important as our rational mind and practical thinking

– Learning that emotions often have an underlying message that we need to hear, as well as problematic beliefs and thoughts about our emotions.

The festive season is an emotional time for many. I speak to many clients and for some it is about seeing family members and painful past events. For others it can be a lack of family or friends. For others, it has very little meaning. There are so many variations on what it might mean for someone and like anything, is always personal.

However, let’s start with a simple practice to assist in grounding ourselves after a busy festive time. Set your phone to vibrate after thirty seconds. Place both your feet on the floor. Then, as much as you can, take your attention to your breathing. We’re not trying to change the breath in any way; do any in or out count… or do this in any particular way. We just want to maintain our focus and attention as much as possible on our breathing. If you find yourself distracted by noises or thoughts, that’s OK, that will happen. Just bring your focus back to your breathing as much as possible, as often as possible.

This 30-second exercise is a small, manageable start in self-care to providing you with some much-needed breathing space. It can be done anywhere, anytime – trust me, I have a very active child – and is designed to give you and your mind a brief rest.

Have a lovely start to the New Year and I look forward to assisting you throughout this year.
