Your only job is to grow by Nate Mico

If you’ve ever felt like you did everything right and you’re still waiting for your life to start, this one’s for you.

A woman came to see me earlier this year, mid-fifties, successful by every normal measure. Good career, good marriage, kids raised and doing fine. She sat down and said something I still think about. “I did everything right, and I still feel like I’m waiting for my life to start.”

She wasn’t in crisis. She wasn’t broken. She’d just quietly stopped growing somewhere around forty, without ever deciding to, and spent the next fifteen years mistaking the stillness for a finish line.

That conversation is the reason I’m writing this piece. Because somewhere along the way we decided our job was to be happy. Or calm. Or healed. That’s all nice if it happens. But it’s not the job.

The job is to grow. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

I’ve worked with hundreds of people over twenty years. The ones who struggle most aren’t the ones going through hard things. Hard things happen to everyone. The ones who struggle are the ones who think growth has an endpoint, who feel like something’s gone wrong if it’s still happening at forty-five.

There’s no session, no course, no book, mine included, that gets you to a finished version of yourself. That used to worry me on behalf of my clients. Now I think it’s the whole point. If you’re still growing at eighty, that’s not a life that fell short of some finish line. It’s a life that kept moving the whole way through.

Comfort and growth rarely show up together.

Most people don’t like this bit. Growth almost always feels like loss before it feels like anything else. Loss of a belief that used to keep you safe. A relationship that used to fit. A version of yourself that used to be enough. So if everything in your life currently feels comfortable, it’s worth a gentle look. Not a crisis. Just a look.

You don’t need a big breakthrough. You need a small one, on repeat.

People come to me chasing the big one. The one that changes everything overnight. I get why, but that’s rarely how it actually works. It’s more like compound interest. Small, unglamorous, repeated choices, stacked up over months and years, that quietly turn into a different life.

Stagnation isn’t peace. It just looks like it from the outside.

I see this all the time. Someone stops growing because it’s easier, and starts calling the stillness peace. But real peace and stagnation can look identical on the surface. The difference only shows up over time. One keeps moving quietly underneath. The other just sits there, getting heavier.

Your only competition is who you were.

Growth stops being useful the second it turns into comparison. Watching what everyone else is achieving, or healing, or becoming, is a fast way to lose the plot. The only honest measure is you against an earlier version of you. Everything else is just noise.

If you’re not growing right now, you might just be safe for a while, and that’s fine too.

Some of you are in a season that calls for rest, not growth, and I don’t want this piece to sound like pressure to constantly perform evolution. There’s a difference between resting on purpose and quietly giving up and calling it acceptance. Only you know which one you’re doing. Sometimes stopping is the bravest thing you can do. This isn’t about forcing growth every single day. It’s about not mistaking a pause for a permanent address.

So, if you’re in a hard season right now, this isn’t me telling you to push harder. It’s me telling you the discomfort you’re feeling isn’t a malfunction. It’s not proof you’re behind, or broken, or doing this wrong. It’s proof you’re still in motion.

None of us are here to fix ourselves once and be done with it. We’re here to keep growing, badly sometimes, quietly other times, for as long as we’ve got.

Universe, amaze me.
