It’s no secret that our world has become an extremely stressful place. Our daily lives are marked by haste, often reducing our concept of health to merely the absence of physical symptoms or ailments. In this rush, we compromise our long-term well-being just to keep up with the pace (Seiler et al., 2020).
As a chiropractor, through all my years of practice, I’ve learned that the body isn’t just a unit that feels physical pain needing treatment. The body is intricately connected to the mind and spirit, and it’s the balance among these that allows the body to do what it’s always meant to do—heal itself (Halbreich, 2021).
We’ve all experienced how a cold can make us feel distant, deeply sad, and anxious, or how stress can lead to spasms and heavy muscle pains. We know how grief, depression, anger, and confusion can make us feel tense, affecting several of our organs. It’s known and proven that if one part of the body malfunctions, eventually, they all do. We’ve witnessed the success of treating the body, mind, and soul as a whole. So, why have we focused all our efforts on only healing the outside?
The body has always been able to heal itself. We witness it every time a cut or a broken bone heals. It’s a wonderful privilege, but the body can only heal when it’s in a fully healthy state (Zejf et al., 2019). Your body is composed of an average of fifty trillion cells. If one cell isn’t working correctly or achieving the desired outcome, the balance is thrown off.
Chiropractic care is about manually adjusting the body in specific areas to correct subluxations and stimulate nerve function so the body can work properly and eventually heal itself again. But beyond manual adjustments and manipulations, I’ve come to learn that chiropractic care is first and foremost a labor of love.
Not only are we as professionals taking advantage of chiropractic techniques to better the body naturally, but we’re also reinstating the body, mind, and spirit connection, fostering a greater level of equanimity and healing within our bodies.
Chiropractic care honors the innate intelligence that we as humans contain within, and all the complex functions that make us whole. It’s a natural way to stimulate the body to heal, connect, and protect itself. This innate intelligence we contain is the same intelligence that makes the cohesion of atoms and molecules in the universe possible. It’s the essence that keeps us alive!
By clearing the interruptions along the spine and allowing the impacted nerves to reestablish their functions, we’re allowing the body to step out of the constant adrenaline and stress responses it’s subjected to daily. The manual adjustments we perform through movements and gentle but effective thrusts allow the body to return to its original, balanced state. We’re allowing the mind and body to experience a moment of joint relief.
Each organ and system in the body has a function made possible through nervous signals. When we get the body to receive signals properly and embrace the world with a different perspective, we’re conditioning the body to continue responding positively so it can keep healing itself. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible when our daily routine requires us to be in a constant state of stress, pressure, and vigilance (Tsigos et al., 2020)
The full presence of a mind that understands patience, love, kindness, and thoughtfulness, connected to a body that responds properly to the stimuli it receives from the mind through the nervous system, is always bound to find spiritual balance. If we’re relaxed and all our systems run in harmony, we’re less likely to suffer from physical ailments.
Chiropractic care stimulates a type of energy that travels through the nervous system, adapts, and drives the capacity to heal and regenerate. It reestablishes the connection between the body and its inner doctor —the renewing power within our own bodies.
This natural solution helps with muscle tension, lethargy and exhaustion, digestive issues, neck and back pain, joint pain, and even sleeping problems. It’s a practice that goes above and beyond by simply manipulating the body in the correct spots.
Life’s fast pace doesn’t leave much room for anything, much less random back pain or a bad cold. Giving a patient space to let go for a couple of moments and helping their bodies reach their full potential —that’s leading with empathy and compassion.
We are not just flesh and bone; we are a body with a mind that experiences a wide range of emotions that affect our person. We exist in our own personal harmonious ecosystem, a beautiful balance between our bodies and our minds. Even though the current state of the world makes it nearly impossible to care for one’s health, the responsibility is still ours. If we care for ourselves, we care for others, and the effect replicates enough that the world could be a healthier, more balanced place. I see that dream becoming a reality every day in my office, and for that, I am a better chiropractor and person.
