Tarot and oracle readings don’t always arrive with neat answers. Sometimes a card opens a door rather than closing one, stirring curiosity, uncertainty, or a sense that something more is being asked of us. In these moments, reach for clarity with a clarifying card.
As a support card, the role of the clarifier is to nudge, highlight, or accentuate an element of the original card. When choosing a clarifier, keep the process simple. Return your attention to the card that feels unresolved and note whether you feel confused, resistant, curious, or otherwise about its presence. Use that feeling to form your question.
If the original card makes no sense to you, try asking, “What am I missing here?” You might narrow the scope of the original by asking which aspect of the card to focus on, or which area of your life it relates to. If the original card sparks resistance, you might like to ask what you are avoiding.
Set your intention, focus on your question, and follow your instinct in choosing a card. You can take the next card from the top of the pile, reshuffle, or select a card at random. Place the clarifier next to the original and notice any repeating motifs, colours, or obvious connections. Remember that the clarifier is a support card. Its role is not to replace or correct the original card’s message, but to illuminate it. For this reason, it’s often best to run with the first feeling, word, or phrase that jumps out when you put down the card.
You can draw a clarifier for any card in any card spread. However, I recommend limiting yourself to one clarifier for simple spreads (up to five cards) and two for more complex spreads. Otherwise, the core message of your reading can be diluted or lost.
If you still feel unclear about the message, try rephrasing your question, reshuffling, and trying another spread. Or walk away from the reading and the question, trusting your intuitive process is already at work and will reveal your answer in a powerful and surprising way over the course of your day and night.
