Divining for Connection by Leela Williams

You might think the wonderful world of crystal balls, tarot cards and palm reading is about predicting what will happen, when and to whom. Yes, that can be part of it. But in practice, what lies ahead is only a small part of the magic. The greater purpose of divination is connection.

Connection can mean many things. It might be linking to your intuition, to hidden patterns in your life, to the symbolic language of a tarot spread or to the archetypes that appear in dreams. It can be a meeting of minds — time with someone who reflects your story back so you can see it more clearly. It may come through the presence of someone no longer in the physical world. In all cases, it is I–Thou energy: the capacity to be changed through closeness with an energy that exists beyond ourselves.

Of all the forms of divination, mediumship is the one most clearly associated with connection. While prediction can happen within that space, it isn’t the expectation. Mediumship is about delivering proof — verifiable detail — that the connection is real. The name of your mum’s favourite perfume, a private nickname, or the memory of your dad burning dinner… mediums offer evidence that consciousness and love survive physical death. They speak to enduring connection.

Evidence is a key component of divination because it creates a bridge between the seen and the unseen. It keeps us grounded. Respect is a given, but trust forms through proof. It’s natural to want something solid before opening your heart to the possibility of connection. When a message contains a detail so specific it could not have been guessed, it becomes that bridge.

When I began reading palms and tarot cards in 1989, it made sense to include details of the past and present as part of the process. If you leap straight into prediction, it can feel unfounded — not just for the person you’re reading for, but for you as the reader. I needed to know that what I was sensing and seeing wasn’t just imagined. The more I sought evidence that could be confirmed by someone I knew nothing about, the more I trusted that I was connecting with something real.

Divination is a three-way conversation between spirit, the reader and the recipient. Evidence builds trust, and trust creates the path for deeper connection. Over time, I realised that while people might arrive seeking the future, the greater treasure is knowing ourselves, feeling seen and loved as we are, and understanding we are not alone on this journey.

Once we have clarity in ourselves, we can build our own futures. The adverts claiming “99% of predictions come true” miss the point. When we divine for connection, we are not asking, “what does the world have in store for me?” Rather, we are asking, “what do I have in store for the world?” The adventure is not about the outcomes, but the connections we make along the way.
