The past few weeks the theme of what do each of us see as valuable has come up alot. The value we place on what we have or want in our life. What each of us finds valuable is deeply personal to us.
Our values define who we are as an individual, a culture, our priorities and reflect our humanity. What we value isn’t always visible or measureable or shared equally by all. When we take the time to reflect on our values on what we treasure the most we can live with more intention and meaning.
Each of us choose what we value from material wealth, to emotional connections, knowledge and integrity that shape our lives. Each of us has items, adventures, experiences, and stuff that we want in our life. Each of us will place a different value on stuff and that value determines if we will choose to purchase it or have it in our life.
When we look at our stuff, how do we determine its value? Is it the lifestyle we are living or would like to live? Is it the amount of money we have available? Is it to satisfy part of our ego? Is it because when we were younger we didn’t have much and are now trying to make up for it. How many unconscious beliefs do you have running that program you to determine what is valuable to you?
To know what we hold to be valuable to us, we first need to know what our values are. Our values are deeply held beliefs that guide us on how we live, make decisions and interact with others. They are our internal compass that shapes our behaviour, influences our choices and reflects what we see as meaningful and important to us. Values are what matter the most to us; What kind of person do you want to be? What do you stand for? How do you treat others?
What are some values that you have? Here are a few to get you started: honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, freedom, loyalty, courage, hard work, family, trust, knowledge, growth, purpose and meaning, time, health and relationships. Looking at these values, which ones do you value? What else do you value? Make a list and keep writing until nothing comes to mind.
How have these values driven you to create the life you have and the decisions you make? These values help you to make choices about what is valuable to you. What will you bring into your life? What will you spend money on? What experiences do you want to have in your life?
Let’s go deeper. For each of the values you have listed, what does that look like to you? What do you do in your life that shows you what is valuable to you? Also what do you not do or have in your life that is valuable but you may not have allowed yourself to have it in your life? For example: You might value family time over career. What does this look like to you? What choices do you make that put family time over career? Are you staying true to this value or have you detoured from it?
When we take the time to look within and acknowledge our values, we use these to make decisions for our life and create our life accordingly. It can be easy to lose sight of our values sometimes. I did this recently. Well I didn’t exactly lose sight of this value which is my highest value and that is family, friends and the connections that I have with those that I love. I had pushed it to the side and not allowed myself to choose it. Crazy right! The highest value for me is family and friends and I wasn’t choosing it. I allowed stuff to get in the way and justified to myself that it was ok, there will be plenty of time. Well that stopped today and I made choices based on my highest value and took action. It felt freeing and empowering to choose for me, to choose what I value the most and make things happen.
Life is too short to not live it how you want to. Look within, see what your values are and go choose what you know you need to. Come back to you and be in alignment with yourself and what you know. Life gets easier when we choose from what is valuable to us.
