How to start a podcast for your business by Kristina Milosevich

Have you thought about starting a podcast of your own? That’s definitely a good idea! Podcasts are a popular format and are loved by many Internet users, and it may also help in generating additional income.

How to start a podcast

Choose a format

Like everything else, a good podcast starts with careful planning. Although at first glance it seems like a podcast is mostly just a chat with the interviewee, in reality it requires a lot of planning.

An interview

This is by far the most popular style of podcast. The host of the podcast brings a guest into each episode and asks them questions related to a topic in an area that the guest knows well. Basically the guest narrates most of the episode.

A conversation

If you’ve ever watched a YouTube podcast, then you’re already familiar with this style of podcast. Conversation is the most common style in YouTube podcast episodes.

Solo

As the name implies, it is a one-man show. Although the format of the content may differ from creator to creator, basically here the host talks about a certain topic that he knows well, gives his opinion on a certain topic, presents his views…etc.

Panel

The format in question is very similar to the interview format, with the main difference that more people participate here.

Choose a name and logo

Although you can name your podcast whatever you want, there are some basic rules you should follow. First of all, it’s good to be original and make sure that the name is not already taken, but also indicates your format.

Choose your equipment

If you are already reading this text, then you are probably aware that you need some equipment for podcasting. Keep in mind that this equipment does not have to be expensive. You can also spend a lot of money on podcast equipment, but this is not recommended at the very beginning.

Record the first episode

If you followed all the previous steps, now it’s time to focus on recording your first episode. This may be a bit of a challenging endeavor at first, but it is certainly very doable.

It is important to prepare well. This means that you first of all plan what you will talk about and in what way, all of which must correspond to the chosen format / style of the podcast. For example, if you are recording an interview, then you should prepare what questions you will ask the guest. Make sure you do a little research on your guest beforehand to make the interview more interesting.

Host the podcast

The last step is to actually host the podcast.

Promoting your podcast

Growing your podcast and marketing it to a larger audience may be a challenge. You will need to market your podcast to the world, and this requires you to be creative and systematic.

Here are some ideas to consider:

• Link to your podcast on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Instagram…etc)
• Make sure your podcast is available on every major podcast platform
• Add blog content to your website to improve your SEO score
• Enable email subscription to notify site visitors when new podcasts are published
• Try appearing on other podcasts to promote your platform.

How to make money from podcasts

Podcasting offers several ways to generate income.

Advertising / Sponsorship

It’s probably happened to you that you’ve heard the host interrupt the show at some point to tell the listeners who the sponsor of that episode is.

Affiliate Marketing

As with regular websites, affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to generate income from podcasts.

Combining podcasts and services

This option is not suitable for everyone, but since you have your own business, this can be a good way to generate additional income. Let’s say you are a company that offers SEO services to its clients. A podcast on SEO is certainly a logical choice when it comes to your business.

Product sales

Selling various products related to your podcast can be a good source of income. This makes sense if you already have a well-known podcast channel and enough loyal listeners.

Why is having your own podcast important?
