I Have Confidence in Me… I Think… Maybe by Davina Herbert
Being confident and feeling powerful are important parts of life. Confidence is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as being certain of your abilities. Life offers us opportunities on a daily basis to live a life that is confident and fulfilled. It is up to us and our mindset how these opportunities play out.
Let me share a story. I had a dream to write a book. Well, multiple books if I am honest. I had started a couple but never finished them. I always enjoyed English classes and writing at school. Yet for some reason, I had not fully embraced my writing until recently.
After my mare, Ms Dolly died in September 2022, a couple of people suggested that I write a book. I felt the need to honour her and the life lessons that she taught me over our fifteen years together.
A month later, my first book, “Dancing with Doll – Accessing Animal Wisdom” was complete. It has been an education as to how many steps there are involved in creating a book. Once my first draft was complete, I sent it to the editor for a ‘read – review’. I had to have confidence in myself that someone would want to read the stories that I had written about animal wisdom. I was super excited when the editor loved my book. She made a couple of suggestions to how I could improve a couple of the chapters. I sat with her comments, made some changes and sent the manuscript back for ‘copy – edit’. That is where the editor goes through the book line by line and looks at grammar and makes any further suggestions for the book. Once again, the editor loved my book and the changes that I had made to my first draft.
Interestingly her strong, positive feedback froze me in my tracks. When she loved the book, I was almost afraid to touch it. I had all the reasons and justifications as to why I hadn’t sent the manuscript back for formatting. They were valid things that were happening, but at the same time, I knew that I was procrastinating. I had to put my ‘big girl panties’ on and just start to go through her comments. Once, I started, I found it easy to keep going. Now I have sent the book off for formatting. The cover art will be sent to me soon. Then I will have a good idea of what my published book will look like. There are multiple feelings rolling around inside of me. I am excited about having the finished copy physically in my hands. At the same time, I am nervous. This is me being vulnerable and sharing how I see the world and the influence that Ms Dolly had on my life. Yet Doll’s teachings have given me the confidence to share with others the wisdom she shared with me.
If you would like to know more about the tools that I used to move forward and have confidence to write my first book, I have a 3-month course that starts on the 15th of April. We will explore different themes each month all based on my book, “Dancing with Doll – Accessing Animal Wisdom”. In May, the theme is around regaining confidence. I also do private sessions with people over Zoom and face to face sessions for clients in the Northern Suburbs of Brisbane and Moreton Bay areas. In these sessions we get to unpack the wisdom that our animal friends have to offer us and how this can enrich our lives. I look forward to connecting with you!
