Part 2-Keeping Your Pet Comfortable over Summer by Elaine Cebuliak

(Continued from last month)

February in the Southern Hemisphere can be the hottest month of the year! Here are some practical tips for keeping your furry companions comfortable during this time.

6. Prevent Sunburn

If your pet has a short coat, light-colored fur, or exposed skin, they can be prone to sunburn. Limit their exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during midday hours. You can also use pet-safe sunscreen on vulnerable areas such as the nose, ears, and belly. Speak to your vet about the best options for protecting your pet’s skin in the heat.

7. Safe Travel Tips for Pets

If you’re traveling with your pet, ensure they are comfortable and safe during the journey. In hot weather, make frequent stops to give your pet a chance to hydrate and cool off. Keep them in a well-ventilated carrier, avoid leaving them alone in the car, and never let them roam freely while driving. Long car trips can be stressful for pets, so plan ahead with breaks and ensure they have plenty of water, especially in Queensland’s summer heat.

8. Keep Parasite Protection Up to Date

The warmer months in Queensland bring an increased risk of parasites like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Make sure your pet is up-to-date with their flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. These parasites can cause a lot of discomfort, and in some cases, serious health issues. Regular grooming and checking for ticks, especially after walks in grassy or bushy areas, can help keep your pet free from these pests.

9. Consider Calming Products

If your pet suffers from anxiety, there are calming products that may help reduce stress. These include pheromone diffusers, calming sprays, or anxiety wraps that apply gentle pressure to your pet’s body. Consult your vet about which options may work best for your pet and make sure to try them out to see if they are effective.

10. Veterinary Care

If your pet shows signs of distress, dehydration, or heat stroke, or if you are concerned about any symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian. It’s always better to be safe and have your pet checked out if you notice unusual behaviour. Regular vet check-ups are essential to ensure your pet is healthy and happy throughout the year, especially during the busy and hot holiday season.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can ensure your pet has a safe, comfortable, and stress-free summer, even in the hot Queensland weather. With a little preparation and attention to their needs, your furry friend will be able to enjoy the season with you — whether that means lounging in a cool spot or joining you for a family gathering.

Happy 2025 to you and your pets from all of us!
