Pregnancy is a Rite of Passage to be Honoured by Lorinda Beattie

Pregnancy is a significant and highly transformative time in a woman’s life. Stepping into motherhood is a rite of passage. However, in today’s society the sacredness of moving from womanhood to motherhood is not as honoured in the same way it once was. At Zen Chi the therapists who engage in consciously working with pregnancy believe the art of honouring mothers can begin with the experience of massage.

Lorinda Beattie, remedial massage therapist and mother to four children, has been reflecting on the importance of mother’s-to-be taking time to honour their changing bodies, relaxing and preparing to step into motherhood. “Pregnancy is a fleeting moment in time and I want to ensure the pregnant women who come into Zen Chi are given an experience that meets, not only their immediate needs of alleviating discomfort, but goes beyond so as they can bond with their baby,” says Lorinda.

There is a deep emotional connection between mother and baby throughout pregnancy. With working full time, the commitment of running a household and potentially having other children to care for placing demands on the mum, the time to nurture that connection is limited.

By scheduling one hour on a regular basis throughout pregnancy to have a massage, Lorinda believes that women are making a mindful effort to bond with baby. They also may alleviate any guilt associated with thoughts that second (or subsequent) pregnancies are not like the first and is providing an opportunity to enjoy baby’s movement inside the womb.

A pregnancy massage will relax and loosen tight muscles, reduce pain, improve mood and sleep quality making a helpful addition to any prenatal care plan. However, it’s the complete mind-body and soul experience that all therapists at Zen Chi hold true when working with pregnancy clients. “It is not just a massage but an opportunity of embracing connection to baby and to yourself,” says Deb Howcroft, Shiatsu and Oriental Remedial Practitioner echoing Lorinda’s sentiment.

The woman’s body is constantly changing throughout pregnancy and add in medical appointments it’s easy for the woman to lose herself and her own needs. A pregnancy massage with a qualified therapist can support her to reconnect with herself. “It truly can be a meditative experience” adds Kayleigh Dennis, Beauty and Massage therapist.

We have therapists who can support mothers-to-be throughout all stages of pregnancy. A pregnancy massage can be booked at Zen Chi Natural Therapies and Wellness for any trimester including the Fourth Trimester following birth.
