We spend a lot of time talking about how to get more energy.
More sleep. Better food. More movement. Another coffee. Another productivity hack.
But perhaps there is another question worth asking.
Where is the energy we already have going?
As the days grow longer and the end of the year begins to appear on the horizon, life can quickly become full again. Invitations arrive. Work accelerates. Weekends disappear. Our attention gets divided between screens, conversations, responsibilities, and endless little things asking to be noticed.
We can have plenty of energy and still finish the day feeling completely depleted.
Sometimes the answer isn’t finding more energy.
It’s becoming more conscious about where we spend it.
Attention Is Energy
Think about how many things compete for your attention before lunchtime.
Messages. Notifications. Emails. News. Social media. Work. Family. Decisions.
Individually, they can seem insignificant. Collectively, they create noise.
And every time our attention moves, some of our energy moves with it.
This is why we can spend an afternoon doing very little physically and still feel exhausted.
Our bodies may have been sitting still, but our minds have travelled everywhere.
Protecting our energy doesn’t mean withdrawing from life. It means becoming more intentional about what receives our attention.
The Difference Between Busy and Alive
Busyness can sometimes masquerade as vitality.
A full calendar can make us feel productive. Constant movement can make us feel important. Being needed can even make us feel purposeful.
But being busy and feeling alive are not necessarily the same thing.
There are activities that consume energy and activities that create it.
A difficult obligation might leave you drained.
A meaningful conversation might leave you energised.
An hour scrolling can disappear without leaving anything behind.
Ten minutes outside can completely change how you feel.
The difference isn’t always how much energy something requires.
It’s whether that energy feels meaningful.
Follow What Awakens You
Spring naturally carries an energy of movement.
Flowers open. Days stretch. Colour returns.
There’s an outwardness to the season after the inward rhythm of winter.
We can work with that energy rather than simply filling it.
Ask yourself what genuinely awakens you.
Perhaps it’s movement.
Music.
Creating something.
Being outdoors.
Sharing a meal.
Sitting with someone who makes you forget to look at your phone.
These moments give something back.
At Sapoi, this idea inspired our Awakening Energy blend. Orange peel brings a bright, uplifting aroma to the warming spices of chai, creating a sensory reminder that awakening doesn’t always mean pushing harder.
Sometimes it simply means becoming more awake to the life you’re already living.
Create a Pause Before You Say Yes
One of the simplest ways to protect your energy is to create a little space between an invitation and your response.
Before automatically saying yes, pause.
Ask yourself
“Does this deserve my energy?”
That question isn’t selfish.
Your energy is finite. Every yes carries an invisible no to something else.
A yes to another commitment might mean a no to rest.
A yes to another hour of work might mean a no to dinner with your family.
A yes to distraction might mean a no to something you’ve been wanting to create.
The goal isn’t to say no to everything.
It’s to make your yes meaningful.
An Energy Ritual
The next time you feel scattered, try something simple.
Put your phone somewhere you cannot reach it.
Prepare a cup of chai.
While it brews, resist filling those few minutes with another task.
Notice the aroma.
Listen to the sounds around you.
Take three slow breaths.
Then ask yourself
“What deserves my energy today?”
Not what demands it.
What deserves it.
There is an important difference.
Choose one thing.
Then give it your full attention.
Energy Follows Intention
We cannot control everything that asks something from us.
Work will still become busy.
Families will still need us.
Plans will change.
Life will remain wonderfully unpredictable.
But we can become more conscious of how we meet it.
Energy isn’t only something we acquire.
It’s something we direct.
And perhaps one of the most powerful forms of wellbeing is learning to place that energy where it creates connection, meaning and life.
So as spring moves towards summer and the year begins gathering pace, don’t simply ask yourself how you can do more.
Ask what deserves more of you.
Then give it your presence.
