How to Review 2024 and Prepare for Your Most Empowered Year Yet by Sally Holden

As the year comes to a close, it’s natural to feel a mix of emotions. You might feel pride in your accomplishments, frustration over unmet goals, or even exhaustion from carrying the weight of so many responsibilities. For highly driven women who are deeply sensitive and care deeply for others, this reflection can sometimes turn into self-criticism or overthinking, or even feeling like we’ve failed.

But here’s the truth: reflecting on the year isn’t about judging yourself—it’s about learning, celebrating, and realigning and figuring out what is truly supportive and resourceful for you and perhaps what you’d like to let go of.

When done with intention, a year-end review becomes a powerful tool for creating a life of purpose, joy, and freedom. It’s your opportunity to let go of what no longer serves you, reconnect with your values, and set yourself up to truly thrive in 2025.

Here’s how to reflect on 2024 and create a powerful start to the new year.

Step 1: Reflect on 2024 with Compassion and Clarity

Take a moment to pause and reflect on the year that’s passed. For many of us, it’s easy to focus on what didn’t go to plan, but this exercise is about shifting your perspective to growth and gratitude.

Questions to Reflect On:

  1. What am I most proud of this year?
Celebrate your wins—big or small. Whether it’s a project completed, a boundary set, or simply getting through a challenging time, acknowledge your resilience and growth.
  2. What lessons did I learn?
Every challenge brings wisdom. Did you learn to prioritise your energy? Set boundaries? Trust yourself more? Write these lessons down—they’re your guideposts for the future.
  3. What would I like to leave behind?
Think of habits, beliefs, or patterns that no longer serve you. For example, taking on too much responsibility for others or neglecting your own self-care. Release these with love as you step into a new chapter.

Step 2: Set Intentions to Thrive in 2025

Once you’ve reflected, it’s time to dream big and set intentions for the year ahead. This isn’t just about setting goals; it’s about creating a vision for a life that feels aligned with who you truly are.

Powerful Tips for Goal Setting:

  1. Prioritize Your Energy: As someone with a huge heart, it’s easy to give endlessly to others, but your energy is precious. Set boundaries that honour your needs, and plan time for rest, play, and creativity.
  2. Choose Goals That Excite You: Instead of goals that feel like obligations, focus on what lights you up. Ask yourself, “What would bring me the most joy and fulfillment this year?”
  3. Break It Down: Big goals can feel overwhelming, so break them into smaller, actionable steps. For example, if your goal is better health, start with something achievable, like 20 minutes of movement each day.
  4. Create a Support System: You don’t have to do it alone. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and hold you accountable to your vision.
  5. Embrace Flexibility: Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and that’s okay. Allow your goals to evolve as you grow and focus on the progress you’re making instead of perfection and be aware of the season of life you are currently in. When we go through big transitions, we often expect ourselves to continue performing at the same level, without realising how many other things we may have added to our plate. (Such as a new baby or taking care of elderly parents etc.)

Step 3: Align Your Life with Your Vision

Goals alone aren’t enough—you need alignment between your beliefs, actions, and values. This is where the real magic happens. Reframe limiting beliefs, cultivate daily habits that support your vision, and step into the version of yourself who’s ready to thrive and that has already achieved your goals. (This provides valuable insights to aligned actions you can take by becoming that person already.)

Daily Practice Tip:
Each morning, take five minutes to connect with your vision. Close your eyes and imagine yourself living your ideal life in 2025. How does it feel? Let that feeling guide your actions throughout the day.
