Reflecting on Creating Something from Nothing

It’s that time of the year when there are of course lots of festive gatherings and ‘things’ to do and for me, it’s also a time to reflect on the year and think about what I’m grateful for.

Holistic Bliss has grown this year (we also celebrated our 5th Birthday at Daisy’s Place!!) and we have been able to reach more readers than ever before. This wouldn’t have been possible without a great team, brilliant writers and advertisers and I thank every one of you who has contributed to making the magazine what it is today.

This year, I have personally enjoyed interviewing: Jenni Madison, Essena O’Neill, Pete Evans, Jay Mulder, Kim Serafini, Kris Carlson, Dr Bruce Lipton and Vicki Taylor and it’s been great to have assistance with some very special cover stories with Petrea King, Shellie Morris, Sandy Forster and Suzi Le Fanue!

I have been conscious this year of waking up on many mornings and thinking to myself, “how cool is this that I get to create a magazine and I have the freedom to keep creating in my own unique way?” It’s a continual process that doesn’t have an end point and requires me to stay in the question to keep things alive.

I started the magazine 5.5 years ago from scratch and back then it was 8 pages and I used to jump in the car and distribute the magazines myself and even did the graphic design for the first two editions using my primitive software! I still haven’t shown Ros (my amazing designer who has been weaving her magic and assisting me for over 3 years) those first two editions!! But we all have to start somewhere!

I’ve realised after talking with many journalists, writers and ‘publishing type people’ over the years that while many people could have done what I have done, a lot would not choose to. Maybe, I just have persistence on my side, which is an ability to keep going when most other people would give up. I allow myself to dream, without getting lost in the dreams or procrastinating. You can have all the dreams in the world but you do have to be able to put those creative ideas into action and give it a go!

So what is it that gets you out of bed in the morning? What lights up your life? What is it where you say, “that’s it, I’m doing it and I’m going to find out what I need to do to take the next steps and I’m not going to take ‘no’ for an answer”…. if I had listened to the people who thought my ideas were stupid, I possibly would be in a very different space and place right now…in many ways the people who say ‘you can’t’ and ‘you are weird’ are such a gift, even though it might not always feel like that straight away! Those comments become like a wake up call to listen to yourself! How good are we at creating just what we require to move things forward?

Many people have asked me if I am taking a big break over the festive season…while I am taking some time off to sit in nature and be with loved ones, I still have lots of creative ideas bubbling away. For a while now it has felt like something ‘new’ is about to emerge and so I keep asking what’s next and what can I do and be to bring this to fruition? Playing with the creative energies is the best kind of Christmas gift I could imagine as it makes me feel like ME…..and I look forward to sharing the adventure of 2015 with you!
