When you grow up being told you’re ‘too’ anything, you learn to shrink yourself to make others comfortable. You learn to hide the parts of you that feel inconvenient. You survive by taking up less space than your soul was designed for.
It wasn’t until my mid-40s – after a breast cancer diagnosis and choosing to stay flat – that I realised how much of myself I’d tucked away. I had been choosing myself, but only in ways that didn’t upset anyone else. I was being me, albeit quietly. Politely. Minimally.
This is not the same as living your unapologetic youness.
We’re often taught that choosing ourselves is selfish. That rest is indulgent. That our inner knowing is unreliable. But here’s the truth:
You cannot pour from an empty cup. And you most certainly deserve to hold your own cup.
Taking up space is not arrogance. It’s self-acceptance. It’s honouring the wisdom that’s been nudging you for years. It’s the first step of your unapologetic youness adventure and the beginning of your Elegant Rebel® chapter. It’s the moment you choose yourself with intention.
Your Soul Has Never Asked You to Shrink
Throughout my breast cancer odyssey and being clinically verified neurodivergent at 53, one thing remained constant: my soul nudges. They were always there. Sometimes loud, sometimes soft, but always guiding me.
For many of us, the challenge isn’t hearing them. It’s trusting them.
Your soul speaks in the most direct way possible – through your Clairs, signs, synchronicities, sensations, songs, sudden knowing. It doesn’t subscribe to the ‘too something’ narrative. It accepts us in all our youness and invites us to do the same.
And when you begin to intentionally notice your soul’s voice, something shifts. You stop shrinking. You stop apologising. You take up space – not from ego, but from alignment. Your truth begins to breathe clarity.
This is the heart of soul-led decision making – the place where your inner knowing becomes movement. It’s that moment you choose to trust what you sense over what you’ve been told. The moment you start to act from your soul’s truth rather than old conditioning.
When My Elegant Rebel® Chapter Truly Began
My debut book is one of the clearest examples of soul-led decision-making I can share. It began as a quiet nudge, then a knowing that I needed to share the upside-down view of life after a bilateral mastectomy.
And as I wrote in the book intro, ‘Such ponderings have led me on one very interesting path.’
That path was entirely soul-driven. I listened to the nudges, trusted the pull and acted long before I felt ready. Writing wasn’t strategic; it was a joy-choice. A decision to honour my inner knowing and give voice to the story my soul had been whispering for years.
The book exists because I followed the exact soul-led process I teach now: Listen. Trust. Act. And the joy that unfolded continues to ripple through my life today.
Taking Up Space Is a Soul-Led Choice
When you trust your nudges, you take up space with clarity and grace. When you honour your joy, you refill your cup. When you listen to your soul, you restore the parts of yourself you thought were lost.
Unapologetic youness isn’t a personality trait. It’s a daily choice. An elegant rebellion against every moment you were told you were ‘too’ something.
And once you take up space from a soul-led place, something beautiful happens. Joy returns. Not the performative kind – the grounded, restorative kind.
If this stirs something in you – a remembering, a nudge, a quiet yes – know that your words are worthy of being heard.
